Job Description Summary
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses on foundations of reading in the elementary and early childhood education programs. The candidate will be expected to integrate knowledge of the Alabama Literacy Act and the science of reading to create teaching and learning opportunities that:
1. Support development of content and pedagogical knowledge in
phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, including by modeling effective teaching strategies that aid in differentiated instruction at the PK-6 level.
2. Foster the development of dispositions for teaching.
3. Facilitate the capacity to work with diverse communities, including with English language learners, by demonstrating a commitment to understanding and addressing issues of equity and diversity related to reading and literacy education.
Other responsibilities include supervision of field experiences and collaborating with reading education faculty to revise course content as necessary. All classes and field experiences are conducted face-to-face on the Auburn University campus and in local schools.
Minimum Qualifications
Applications must have (1) a Master’s degree in Reading Education from an accredited institution OR a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or ESOL education with 18 hours completed in reading education at the time of employment; (2) a minimum of three years of full-time classroom teaching experience at the K-6 level; (3) the ability to teach undergraduate courses in literacy, foundations of reading, and elementary or early childhood education with a commitment to equity and diversity; and (4) the ability to collaborate with local school administrations, teachers, students, and community members.
Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include: (1) an earned doctorate in reading education; (2) knowledge of and experience with the Alabama Literacy Act and the science of reading; (3) training in LETRS (or other formal training in phonological awareness and phonics); and (4) extensive classroom experience teaching reading (beyond the 3-year minimum requirement), particularly in settings serving English language learners or with additional coursework in ESOL education.
