ASSOCIATE MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR ORGAN PROCUREMENT, TRANSPLANT SURGEON

Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking a Transplant Surgeon to join the faculty in the Division of Transplantation while simultaneously serving on a dynamic leadership team for Organ and Tissue Donation (OTD) at our hospital-based Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). Our OTD Program is based in Madison just 3 miles away from our flagship quaternary care University Hospital.

Responsibilities:

Principal duties:
60% Leadership Role: Associate Medical Director of OPO
The successful candidate will provide medical direction to the UW Organ and Tissue Donation Program under the Direction of the OTD Medical Director for a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours per week on average with duties as described below:
1. Work collaboratively with Organ Donation and Transplantation (OTD), and the UW OTD Medical Director and leadership team of UW OTD to accomplish operational efficiency, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and staff and donor family satisfaction goals.
2. Share call with Medical Director to provide 24 X 7 on call coverage for evaluation of donor referrals, workup and management of potential organ donors, oversight of organ evaluation, allocation, and recovery, and provide real-time support to hospital partners as needed.
3. Perform organ procurements as needed.
4. Assist in organ procurements as needed by teaching transplant surgical fellows and surgical recovery staff
5. Provide leadership for the on-going quality assessment and performance improvement of UW OTD.
6. Direct and participate in ongoing research opportunities in organ donation.
7. Facilitate positive relationships with all donor hospitals through collaborative communication with concerns from peer physicians; provide educational talks, and other outreach activities.
8. Provide a supportive learning environment for the transplant fellows and OTD staff to enrich their understanding and competency with respect to donor management and organ recovery.

40% Transplant Surgery Clinical Role: Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Surgeon
The candidate should possess strong clinical experience in kidney and pancreas transplantation, and living donor nephrectomy, as well as expertise in transplantation immunosuppression.

Clinical duties include:
1. Working as a faculty member in the Division of Transplantation as a kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon including inpatient rounding, primary transplant call at University Hospital, outpatient clinic and organ procurement.
2. Performing living donor nephrectomies.
3. Educating and training transplant surgical fellows, surgical residents, medical students and advanced practice providers (APP).

The Department of Surgery consists of more than 140 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding. The Division of Transplantation is one of the world's leading organ transplant programs, and has been on the forefront of transplant advancement since its creation in 1966. Surgeons and scientists in the Division of Transplantation have made innovative discoveries that are used throughout the world. It is one of the most experienced transplant programs in the nation, and more than 15,000 organs have been transplanted at UW in the past 50 years. The Division currently consists of 10 clinical faculty who perform nearly 500 abdominal organ transplants annually with significant academic contributions in basic and translational science, health outcomes, surgical education, and ethics. The training programs include four surgical fellows in abdominal transplantation, and an inpatient service with R3, R1, Medical Student, and APP involvement.

The successful candidate is excellent in written and verbal communication, effectively articulates the mission of organ and tissue donation to stakeholders, is a collaborative communicator and works well within a multidisciplinary team. In addition, competitive candidates demonstrate effective problem solving and are able to navigate new challenges with agility and adaptability.

MD, DO, or equivalent degree.

Qualifications:

Degree and area of specialization:
MD, DO, or equivalent degree. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Surgery is required. Completion of an ASTS approved transplant surgery fellowship is required. Previous experience in an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), especially in a leadership role is preferred, but not required.

License/certification:
Candidate is required to have or be eligible for a Wisconsin Medical License. Board certification or Board Eligible in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery or American Osteopathic Board of Surgery or equivalent is strongly preferred. Candidate must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges.
