Job Description or Duties

Kearney Bound is a program for academically talented and motivated first-generation students  from North Platte, Lexington, Kearney High and Kearney Catholic high schools. The program provides mentoring to select students beginning in their freshman year of high school and carrying on through graduation from UNK.

  • Serves as the on-campus contact for Kearney Bound students once enrolled at UNK
  • Teaches 2 sections of LNSK 103 – a course that assists new students with the transition to college
  • Intervenes with UNK Kearney Bound students in addressing academic problems, including coordination with other UNK staff and faculty
  • In 1:1 meetings with KB students advises on life skills
  • Provides additional support and resources as Kearney Bound students progress toward their degrees
  • Establishes and supervises the Kearney Bound Scholars Association Student Group and the Kearney Bound Learning Community
  • Collaborates with Student Support Services concerning LNSK 103 and students who are enrolled in Kearney Bound and SSS programs
  • Organizes Kearney Bound programming and activities for currently enrolled Kearney Bound UNK students
  • Maintains regular high school visits with KB HS students and collaborates with HS personnel who support their academic efforts to prepare for college
  • Informs high school students who qualify to apply to the program
  • Evaluates applicants and selects participants in consultation with the school counseling staff of the high schools and other personnel as needed
  • Plans and provides regular meetings with high school students enrolled in the program and with their parents
  • Responsible for all correspondence with Kearney Bound students and their parents
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience interacting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds is essential
  • Positive customer service orientation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office applications and the willingness to learn new technologies
  • Valid Nebraska driver’s license necessary for travel to high schools in Kearney, Lexington, and North Platt


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Prior experience working with students in an educational environment
  • Experience working with student recruitment
  • Experience working with financial aid for higher education
