College of the Sequoias is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, temporary position in the Journalism Department beginning August 2022.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Journalism/Mass Communication professor include providing instruction at one of the three campus and/or at off-site community campus locations. The faculty member will provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines while using comparative cross-cultural, multicultural, and multidisciplinary perspectives. The primary teaching assignment will be in journalism and mass communications.

It is also highly desirable that the candidate has experience and/or interest in curriculum development, program review, transfer articulations, equitable practices and online teaching.

Assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes, online, and teaching at our locations in Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.
The instructor will be responsible for:
  • Create new and/or revise journalism/mass communication curriculum to better align with four-year transfer programs in mass communication/media studies.
  • Create a new one-year certificate in mass communication/media studies and move through the college curriculum process for the Fall 2024 catalog.
  • Teach the equivalent of 12 LHE credits in journalism/mass communication (20% reassignment from the usual 15 LHE course load).
  • Serve as advisor to the online newspaper and attend conferences with students.
  • Collaborate with, and lead discussions between CTE and Communication faculty to identify commonalities and possible connections between mass communication/media studies curriculum, technology and pedagogy.
  • Lead the journalism annual program review and self-study, assessment and outcome report, and work with the Division Chair and Dean to request funding to support needed improvements or changes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Advisory Boards.


Qualifications

The candidate must meet one of the following criteria. The degree must generally be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.
  • Masters in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism OR
  • Bachelors in either of the above AND Masters in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social science, business, business administration, marketing, graphics or photography
  • OR the equivalent
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    The Journalism Department is looking for evidence of the following:
    • Successful community college teaching or work experience with diverse student populations.
    • Curriculum development experience or interest.
    • Evidence and ability to address the needs of diverse and frequently underserved student populations taking a wide range of college level courses.
    • Evidence of ability to use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
    • Ability to implement contemporary pedagogical philosophies, methods, and techniques including multi-media to develop and deliver instruction in classroom and lab settings.
    • In-depth knowledge/field experience in one or more of the following areas: Journalism, mass communication and media.
    • Commitment to developing instructional activities, course syllabi, course outlines and other necessary material.
    • At least two years of teaching experience at the adult, secondary, and /or post-secondary level.
    • Ability to incorporate student learning outcome objectives within course and programs and willingness to use and develop stated objectives and measures.
    • Evidence of knowledge and application of contemporary pedagogy, including the use of digital technology, video conferencing such as Zoom and Adobe Suite software.
    • Experience with course and program assessment.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in cooperation with staff, colleagues, and students.
    • Self-motivated and collaborative.
    • Excellent time management and planning skills.

    • Assume leadership roles within the department and the ability to work across disciplines.
    • Regular attendance of office hours.
    • Evidence of continued professional development or currency in the field.

    • Work collegially and collaboratively within the Language and Communication Divisions and the college community.
    • Assisting in the advancement of the institution's vitality and growth.
    • Participation in department, division, and institutional responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of respect and equity on a diverse campus.
    • Interest in exploring innovative ways for meeting the educational needs of students.
    • Participation in community and/or high school recruitment activities or planning.
