Johns Hopkins is seeking an Executive Director who is responsible for providing the supervision, vision, leadership, and strategic direction to civic engagement programs and services offered through the Center for Social Concern (CSC). The Executive Director of the Center for Social Concern is responsible for the overall management, risk mitigation, and operations of the Center as well as being responsible for the budget of the Center.
The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that civic engagement initiatives are connected to the academic mission of the University, including providing leadership to faculty interested in engaging with students and/or offering civic engagement experiences. The Executive Director serves as part of the Student Affairs division and reports directly to a member of the division’s senior leadership team. The position will also have partnerships and well-established relationships across the University, including with but not limited to, SNF Agora Institute, Centers for Diversity and Inclusion, Student Transitions and Family Engagement, Government and Community Affairs, Center for Leadership, Engagement, Experiential Development, and Economic Development.
The Executive Director will also partner with other university civic engagement hubs including Center for Educational Outreach in the Whiting School for Engineering and SOURCE that serves Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. The Executive Director, in partnership with others, stewards such civic engagement anchor programs as Hopkins Votes, Hopkins Engage, Democracy Day and Community Impact Internship Program.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
The Executive Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Management, Operations
& Budget

Hire, train, evaluate, and
supervise 11 full-time staff members
Direct the development and
implementation of risk management policies and
procedures
Communicate and ensure
compliance with University policies, and develop and implement
civic engagement policies and procedures
Develop and monitor
budgets comprised of unrestricted and restricted funding
sources
Align financial and human
resources with civic engagement-related
priorities
Cultivate purposeful
relationships with alumni/ae

Cultivate and promote the
long-range vision and mission of civic engagement on the Homewood
campus, and in support of the Homewood Community Partners
Initiative (HCPI)
In partnership with SNF
Agora Institute, set the vision, leadership and execution for
Democracy Day, a program focused on promoting early faculty and
student engagement
Provide vision and
leadership for Hopkins Votes
Develop and implement
strategic priorities that are aligned with the academic mission of
the University
Provide leadership and
direction to the development and implementation of assessment
strategies to collect, manage, and report data related to civic
engagement effectiveness on the Homewood campus
Cohesive Programs & Services
- Identify and implement structures that further connect the programs and services of the Center for Social Concern to other civic engagement partners at the University and in the City of Baltimore
- Working with campus and university partners, continue implementation of Hopkins Engage to create a unified tracking platform for civic and community engagement for students
- Foster strategic relationships with internal and external constituencies to capitalize on opportunities for connecting with community organizations (e.g., non-profits, public schools, government agencies, etc.)
- Identify, implement, and assess a civic engagement pipeline (pre-enrollment, enrollment, and post-enrollment) strategy with student affairs and student services offices

Meet regularly with
administrators whose offices are connected to civic engagement
pipeline to encourage coordination and identify the intersections
of civic engagement initiatives
Meet regularly with staff
in various offices to foster coordination and information
sharing
Collect, analyze, and
disseminate information about best practices in the civic
engagement field
Provide leadership and
coordination for Homewood-wide civic engagement
initiatives
Communication, Outreach & Representation
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with the City of Baltimore and nonprofit leaders to ensure that civic engagement at the University is addressing community needs
- Represent Homewood civic engagement efforts to local, regional, and national organizations, including Campus Compact
- Plan and implement a communication strategy for civic engagement to summarize key initiatives, collaborations, and assessment data
- Establish a communication strategy for undergraduate and graduate students, University personnel, and City partners about civic engagement

Master’s Degree, with a
preference for an advanced or terminal degree
Ten years of progressive
experience in a related field, preferably in the non-profit sector
and/or higher education administration

Strong budgetary,
planning, organizational, supervision and management skills and
experience
Demonstrated ability to
bring a high degree of enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to civic
engagement
Demonstrated experience
collaborating, negotiating, and building
consensus
Demonstrated success in a
