Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic and Faculty Affairs

The Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Faculty Affairs (Sr AVC AFA) for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) provides executive leadership for and oversight of central campus administrative units (Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation, Faculty Affairs, Health Sciences Library, International Student and Scholar Services, and the Teaching and Learning Center) that support academic programs and faculty members across UTHSC’s six colleges. The position, reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs (AFSA), works collaboratively with vice chancellors, associate/assistant vice chancellors, deans, program directors, department chairs, faculty members, and system administrators in support of the institution’s academic programs, mission, and strategic priorities to educate graduates who meet the needs of the state and the global community. In addition, this position is responsible for providing central campus leadership, administrative oversight, policy development and interpretation, professional development, and support for shared governance and the life cycle of faculty at UTHSC.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Oversees the coordination of efforts and the integration of central campus academic support units to further the university’s academic programs and faculty to strengthen synergies across colleges and academic programs.
2. Collaborates across various units, departments, programs, colleges, and locations to maximize the effectiveness of academic programs, faculty members, and operational efficiencies.
3. Works collaboratively with Information Technology Services and others to coordinate campus-wide review and implementation of tools, technologies, and applications designed to support academic programs, curriculum, students, and faculty members.
4. Fosters interprofessional and cross-campus collaborations through ongoing discussions across disciplines, professions, collegiate, and location boundaries.
5. Ensures that the requirements of regional (SACSCOC) and programmatic accreditors related to ongoing educational/instructional efforts of established academic programs as well as proposed/expanded academic programs are identified and inform decisions for resource allocation.
6. Works collaboratively with various stakeholders (administrative units, colleges, deans, academic deans, program directors, campuses, clinical partners) in support of the institution’s strategic priority to educate outstanding graduates who meet the needs of the state and its communities.
7. Oversees the faculty credentialing process to ensure compliance with UTHSC and SACSCOC accreditation requirements for teaching faculty.
8. Oversees the development, revision, integration, and implementation of policies, procedures, and processes in support of academic programs and faculty through coordination with academic and faculty affairs units, academic programs, faculty members, and collegiate and campus administration.
9. Primary responsibility for oversight of the UTHSC Faculty Handbook and review of proposed changes to college bylaws, integration of all UT System and/or Board of Trustees policy changes pertaining to faculty, and communication to the campus community.
10. Develops, evaluates, recommends, and coordinates the implementation of faculty processes and procedures, including recruitment, hiring, appointments, reappointments, annual performance and planning review, tenure, promotion, and retirement.
11. Works with direct reporting units, other AFSA leadership staff, and campus stakeholders to establish and move forward strategic priorities and initiatives.
12. In collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor of Institutional Effectiveness and Decision Support (AVC IEDS), forecasts and anticipates needs given the introduction of new academic programs, increasing or decreasing enrollments, and changes in numbers of faculty members.
13. Oversees the operations of the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation, Faculty Affairs, Health Sciences Library, International Student and Scholar Services, and the Teaching and Learning Center by promoting synergistic efforts and eliminating redundancies and inefficiencies.
14. Actively promotes diversity, equity, and an inclusive environment, including ensuring attention to non-Memphis locations of faculty members and academic programs.
15. Encourages scholarly activities and research initiatives across units in the line of responsibility, other AFSA units, and other individuals or groups (UTHSC, UT System, or outside of UT). This includes grant proposals, publications, and presentations.
16. Supports leadership development within the Academic and Faculty Affairs units and contributes to leadership development throughout AFSA, UTHSC, and UT System.
17. Works collaboratively with faculty members and leaders of departments, academic programs, colleges, campus, and UT System to ensure that academic and faculty policies are understandable, consistent, reflective of best practices, and informed by UTHSC’s peer institutions.
18. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION:  PhD, EdD, ScD or any equivalent academic doctoral degree or doctoral degree in a health professions discipline.   Credentials consistent with a minimum faculty rank of professor in a discipline that would be consistent with a faculty appointment in one of the colleges of UTHSC.   (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in higher education, education, or academic or faculty affairs teaching experience at the college or university level in a healthcare discipline; leadership and administrative experience or experience coordinating or managing projects in a healthcare setting/discipline.
