Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Communications and in collaboration with Division of Marketing and Communications partners, the Assistant Director for Marketing is a key member of the Newhouse School’s communications team, responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of an integrated digital content strategy that supports school goals and targets key audiences within a One University framework.
Bringing deep knowledge of best practices in content strategy and content marketing, this person will help drive audience awareness and engagement across Newhouse’s marketing channels and help grow the school’s web traffic and social reach through engaging digital content.
This person has responsibility to understand and follow brand guidelines and coordinate with Marketing related to the university’s global content calendar.
This person must have expert knowledge of SEO and web analytics and will monitor content performance using analytics reporting tools and provide regular dashboard reports and recommendations.
This person has responsibility to work within established university brand standards, governance (digital, including social media), and approach.
He or she will identify, write and edit a large volume of content, and direct the production of print, digital and video projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or a related field is expected, as is a strong understanding of academic communications and college admissions marketing.
Minimum of 10 years professional experience in marketing communications and website content management with increasing levels of responsibility is required, including HTML editing and best practices for SEO, UI, UX and analytics tools and technologies.
Experience managing people and projects is a must.

Job Specific Qualifications

A portfolio of relevant work that demonstrates strategic thinking, an engaging style and a command of language. Superior writing and editing skills, with an emphasis on writing for web, social media, advertising and video.
Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines and produce quality work, both independently or as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a highly collaborative nature. Project management skills, initiative and follow-through are critical. Experience with web publishing and content management tools and the ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and platforms. A deep understanding of content strategy and a measurement-based approach to content.
Strong understanding of SEO, UI, UX and accessibility best practices. Familiarity with analytics tools and technologies for tracking, reporting and analyzing digital content performance tied to measurable business goals and outcomes.
Knowledge regarding existing and emerging best practice and trends in digital media.
Experience with WordPress; Adobe Creative Cloud products, including PhotoShop; Google Analytics; Facebook Insights/Ads; Google AdWords; Sprout, Buffer or other social media dashboard; and MailChimp.

Responsibilities
  • In coordination with the University’s marketing and content teams, write, produce and edit a variety of content that conveys the Newhouse School value proposition and pillars in valuable and relevant ways to varying audiences.
  • Create a content calendar that aligns with the Newhouse School strategic plan and University editorial calendar.
  • Direct the creation and publication of content on the Newhouse School’s website (newhouse.syr.edu) and social media accounts, including the creation and review of high-level content (includes some writing, editing and video production, as well as supervising the work of others).
  • Follow Syracuse University brand approach and adhere to digital governance.
  • Act as project manager on digital projects and manage all aspects of production, including assembling the creative team, scripting/developing the content, involving the communications director and other stakeholders at key review points, meeting deadlines and ensuring a quality final product.
  • Collaborate with central marketing partners and manage relationships with external providers of digital content.
  • Supervise content creators (including interns). Assign projects, review work for quality and accuracy and monitor productivity.
  • Advise and ensure best practices for user experience and display of information.
