The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Visual Communications ( VIS ) department to begin August 21, 2023. The successful candidate will primarily teach interactive design, user experience design, human-centered design, as well as foundational design theories and practice. Expertise in designing Voice User Interfaces and/or Extended Reality is preferred.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential to engage ambitious undergraduate, graduate and military program students in one of the preeminent visual communications programs in the country. The ideal candidate should specialize in at least one of the following areas:
- User Experience Research
- User Interface Design
- Immersive Design: Extended Reality
- Designing beyond screen interactions
- Voice User Interfaces

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate potential for conducting academic scholarship or producing industry-related creative activity that will position the hire as a well-known expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected. Qualifications
A master’s degree or higher is preferred. Candidates must have significant professional experience in the practice of design as a product designer, design researcher, UX designer, interaction designer, experience designer, or information designer. They should also have knowledge and practice of accessible and inclusive design practices. Previous teaching experience is a plus, but not required.

Candidates should demonstrate their ability to instruct others by drawing upon their experience with current industry technologies and equipment utilized by professionals. Being versed in current technological trends as well as being a problem solver and a good team player are essential, as one of the key values and strengths of the school lies in collaboration and interdisciplinary praxis for students and faculty.

The candidate should demonstrate an ability to bring a forward-thinking philosophy to the design program. This hire should also be willing to explore, innovate and potentially teach with experimental and emerging platforms.

Courses the faculty member would teach range from: basic, intermediate and advanced design courses for our undergraduate and graduate programs to basic and advanced courses for our military students; as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the design industry.

The VIS department highly values designing for social good in and out of the classroom curriculum. Top candidates will have ideas how to best augment this for the various VIS programs and its student populations. Responsibilities
In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the school, this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry outreach such as the department’s Pixels & Print Design Workshop.

About the Visual Communications Department

The Visual Communications Department ( VIS ) is regarded as one of the best in the nation. Its 10 full-time faculty/staff members, complemented by a specialized adjunct force, prepare future leaders in visual storytelling industries — primarily video production, motion graphics, photography, graphic design, and immersive storytelling (AR/VR) — by introducing students to principles, theories and strategies of storytelling; practices and systems of production, distribution and exhibition; as well as the economic, political and social impact of their work on the world.

We value a global perspective and experiences, which are exemplified through The Alexia Grants and The Center for Global Engagement, both of which are run by VIS faculty members.

The Visual Communications department ( VIS ) is one of the most versatile in the Newhouse School. With slightly over 50 undergraduate photography majors, 60 undergraduate design majors, and 18 graduate students, its size helps foster a tight-knit community, yet is large enough to allow for a variety of collaborative projects and workshops — both in Syracuse and around the world. Our program consists of a mix of core requirements and an extensive selection of elective coursework, which empowers students to customize their programs of study. Majors also can study abroad — over 100 programs in 60 countries. VIS students annually earn national recognition of their creative work through a variety of video, photography and design competitions and film festivals.

Alumni pursue a wide variety of careers that include work as filmmakers, film editors, cinematographers, documentary photographers, visual producers, picture editors, photojournalists, commercial/advertising photographers, designers (motion graphics, UIUX, immersive design, traditional graphic design), and media educators. They are found in numerous leadership positions and often return to campus to share their knowledge.

For close to 50 years, we have also taught an array of skills to advanced photojournalists from the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines through the Military Visual Journalism Program.
