Reporting to the Chief Safety Officer (CSO), the Deputy Chief Safety Officer of Support Services (Deputy CSO SS) works closely with University Safety staff, students, faculty, administration, and the local community to direct and administer the overall public safety initiatives, as well as promote a safe and secure environment across the University. The Deputy CSO SS is not required to be a certified peace officer through Utah POST and will not represent themselves as having peace officer authority.

This is an appointed position and serves at the pleasure of the Chief Safety Officer.

The Chief Safety Officer is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all campus safety initiatives, as well as overseeing the University Safety Department, which includes a central administrative Office of the CSO, as well as public safety operational divisions, which include University Police, Campus Security, U Health Security, Emergency Management, Community Services, and Emergency Communications.

COMPENSATION:             155,000 to 170,000

WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time, Mon. – Fri. 8 A.M. – 5 P.M., occasional nights and weekends.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Provides direct support to the Chief Safety Officer and oversight to University Safety non-police operations ensuring that policies and practices are followed across all areas of campus.

2) Directs and oversees the operations and strategic planning of the support services functions; acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, students, and external entities to ensure continuity and quality of service; and supports the University of Utah’s goals and mission.

3) Builds trust and demonstrates commitment with historically underrepresented communities regarding safety.

4) Assures appropriate programs and resources are in place to meet the safety and security needs of the University. Will administer programs and services that provide safety and security for all members of our community.

5) On behalf of the CSO, and in partnership with the Deputy CSO for Law Enforcement Services, acts as a liaison with all stakeholders and partner agencies on matters pertaining to safety

6) Oversees and supervises non police personnel; provides strategic direction by setting short and long-term goals, estimating budgetary requirements for staff, space and equipment planning, and implementing special projects and policies; forecasts staffing, capital and operating budget needs; and ensures high customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through.

7) Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships (such as Student Affairs and Equity Diversity and Inclusion); participates in departmental and university-wide committees; represents the CSO as a senior designee and supports management and supervisory staff through professional development opportunities and/or educational programs

8) Collaborates effectively with other functional areas of the CSO Office.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The position requires a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, or an area that contributes to the effective administration of a university or public safety agency, or the equivalency, as well as a minimum of eight years of progressively more responsible management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Prior experience at a higher education institution, working with a diverse student body on an urban campus, is highly preferred.
  • Qualified applicants must successfully complete the department-approved physical fitness test, a thorough background investigation, and must be willing to submit to a drug screening test.
