The Associate Dean for Student Affairs leads the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine team that is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment, ensuring that all students reach their educational, career, and personal goals. The Associate Dean will work with the College community and the student body to advance the pursuit of academic excellence balanced with wellness, equity, and inclusivity to enhance the student experience. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Associate Dean will provide leadership in the development, implementation and continuous evaluation of a comprehensive, evidence-based student affairs program, including recruitment, holistic admissions, student services, student advising and mentorship, student development, learning support, career development and wellness initiatives. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs will work in close collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs and the Associate Dean for Clinical Relations and Outreach to create a supportive educational environment that engages students and faculty. They will also work closely with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to enhance diversity, equity initiatives and inclusivity among students, in part by working to recruit and retain a richly diverse student body. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create a vision and strategy to support the College’s commitment to being a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment
  • Implement evidence-based initiatives to successfully recruit and retain students
  • Be a part of developing a learning environment to support wellness, resilience and professional competency.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation and continuous evaluation of comprehensive Student Affairs and academic support programs, including recruitment, admissions, student services, learning support, advising, professional development and wellness
  • Engage in partnerships with other programs and departments in the College and the University of Arizona to shape an exceptional student experience that offers high levels of student engagement, learning success and professional growth opportunities for all students
  • Provide advocacy and, in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs, develop academic plans for students who may be experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties and work closely with course and clerkship directors, learning specialists, the registrar and advisors in order to initiate appropriate interventions
  • Approach all students holistically, recognizing the needs of students from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, working collaboratively with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion to reduce systemic barriers to success
    Support and facilitate Disability Accommodations as determined by the Disability Resource Center
  • Act ethically, with integrity, authenticity and self-awareness; adhering to the College’s and the University’s values, interacting with others in a way that engenders confidence in them and in the organization
    Build partnerships and invest in the development of strategic internal and external partnerships – collaborate to reach productive agreements and foster goodwill.
  • Lead the effort in maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations and relevant program accreditation requirements for all areas related to Student Affairs, including measuring the success of interventions and continuous quality improvement
  • Work collaboratively with the senior leadership, faculty, and staff in developing policies and procedures related to all areas of student life
  • Participate in student-oriented College events
  • Develop and implement College policies related to professionalism and student conduct, including academic integrity
    Work collaboratively with university leadership, faculty, and staff, creating policies and procedures, and communicating them in a clear and inclusive manner
  • Committee membership and participation as needed

  • A strong student-centered philosophy and understanding of student development and adult learning, including respect, compassion and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body
  • Strong advising and mentoring skills that enable mediation, conflict resolution and problem solving
  • Excellent communication, managerial and leadership skills, with the capacity to inspire a dynamic staff and faculty
  • Proven ability to work in an inclusive and consultative way with students ,faculty, staff, and peers
  • Demonstrated ability to convincingly represent College and University cultural and ethical values and policies to students, faculty and staff
  • Knowledge of social, cultural and educational conditions that impact learning and performance such as racism, implicit bias, stereotype threat, grit, resilience, self-efficacy, social/cognitive career theory, learning theories, group learning and development

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D., DVM or any terminal degree
  • 3 years of experience in Student Affairs
  • 5 years of experience in higher education leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Counseling, Educational Administration, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience with holistic admissions processes
  • Experience in veterinary medicine, health sciences or other professional academic program
