The University of Iowa invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel. Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer of the University of Iowa and manages the provision of legal services to the institution.

Founded in 1847, the University of Iowa is the state's oldest institution of higher education and is located alongside the picturesque Iowa River in Iowa City. A member of the Association of American Universities since 1909 and the Big Ten Conference since 1899, the University of Iowa is home to one of the most acclaimed academic medical centers in the country, as well as globally recognized leadership in the study and craft of writing. Iowa is known for excellence in both the arts and sciences, offering world-class undergraduate, graduate, and professional academic programs in a wide variety of fields.

The Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel will be an accomplished attorney with demonstrated leadership and management skills; a distinct appreciation for the University of Iowa’s mission and culture of respect for all of its constituencies; an advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion; and adept at working in a complex environment on a growth trajectory.

The Office of the General Counsel coordinates legal representation and counsel on issues facing all sectors of the University, at the highest level of professionalism and integrity. The Office advises and represents the University of Iowa, including the President and Vice Presidents, University of Iowa Health Care, and all of the schools and colleges on campus, and provides a full range of legal services to University executive officers, administrators, faculty, and staff in their official capacities. The Office of the General Counsel helps the University of Iowa to fulfill its educational, research, and service missions in accord with the myriad legal and policy requirements applicable to public research universities.  The Office of the General Counsel is comprised of 12 full-time attorneys (including the General Counsel), with one open attorney position, and 6 full-time staff members, with one open staff position. It has an operational budget of over $2 million.

Minimum qualifications include: Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school; admitted to practice law in Iowa or be eligible and admitted within one year of employment; minimum of 10 years of broad legal practice serving clients in higher education, an academic medical center, or an analogous government, nonprofit, or corporate setting; demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce/academic environment.  Preferred requirements and additional information about University of Iowa can be found in the leadership profile: https://www.agbsearch.com/searches/vice-president-for-legal-affairs-and-general-counsel-university-of-iowa
