The VCU Academic Technologies Department is looking for a Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator to join the team!
Position Summary
Provide application and server level support for complex web-based Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Content Management System (CMS) on a variety of platforms. Performs upgrades, installations and fixes related to the LMS and CMS applications. Analyze problems related to the LMS and CMS applications, recommend solutions and implement solutions. Provide technical advice and expertise to teammates and other stakeholders at VCU. Works closely with the Technical Team Lead to serve as a backup and technical resource. This position is also eligible for flexible work arrangements.
Responsible for Tier 3 support related to Canvas, Canvas Catalog, Lon-Capa. Interfaces with relevant Technology Services (TS) teams, VCU stakeholders, and vendor partners to maintain system functionality and implement improvements. Identifies any enhancements needed to Learning Systems (LS) policy and procedure relevant to system administration and customer needs. Responsible for serving as a backup for Tier 2 support for LS-managed systems, as needed. Serves as the primary development resource for the LS team related to Canvas, Canvas Catalog, Kaltura. Identifies opportunities for improvements specific to the VCU environment (automations, feature requests, etc.). Facilitates the communication of updates to stakeholder groups related to custom changes made in LS-supported systems. Responsible for system uptime and responsiveness to system outages, including participation in an on-call rotation. Maintains thorough and up-to-date documentation of system changes and system administration procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with system administration of the Canvas course
management system or similar LMS.
- Minimal knowledge of Linux/Unix, MS Windows & iOS operating
environments.
- Familiarity with web server technologies such as Apache &
Nginx.
- Working knowledge and understanding of developing using HTML,
CSS and Javascript.
- Willingness to be a team player who offers energy and
enthusiasm.
- Ability to effectively and professionally communicate complex
technical information, both verbally and in writing.
- A demonstrated desire to innovate and explore new academic
technologies.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse entities to
coordinate resources and deliver new services.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse
faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a
staff member at VCU.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in
business, educational technology, instructional design, computer
science, adult education or related field; or equivalent
combination of education and work experience.
- Extensive experience with system administration of the Canvas
course management system or similar LMS.
- Ability to write scripts and use API to automate tasks.
- Experience with BASH and basic Linux command line tools.
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace Apps and Google Apps
Script.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
