Job Description:

The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure accruing position at the rank of Lecturer, beginning summer 2022, for the position of Assistant Director of Academic Affairs. This is an advising, administrative, and teaching position with no research responsibilities. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.

The University of Florida’s Latin American Studies program was founded in 1931 and has been a Title VI NRC since 1961. Ranked #5 among public universities by US News and World Report in 2021, UF is one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in the country, and the only UAA member and land grant university in Florida. The Director of the Center for Latin American Studies reports directly to the Provost of the university. The Center is organized around a core of 23 Center-based faculty, 13 highly qualified staff members, and more than 160 affiliate faculty across the university.

The distribution of responsibilities is teaching 2 courses 25%, administration and advising 75%.

The teaching obligation for this position is two courses per year, in a field relevant to modern Latin American Studies. Candidates who can bring diverse perspectives to teaching an undergraduate introductory course to Latin American Studies are strongly desired. This is a forward-facing position that will require a high level of engagement with students and faculty. The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs will lead center-wide curriculum coordination of our master’s and graduate programs https://www.latam.ufl.edu/academics/graduate-programs/ and direct the Masters in Latin American Studies (MALAS) https://www.latam.ufl.edu/academics/graduate-programs/malas/ . The position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the MALAS program including academic advising of MALAS students, enrollment, orientation, academic progress, completion, and promotion of students’ academic life.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Teach LAS2001 in the Fall and teach one course in the Spring that focuses on introducing students to the broader aspect of Latin American Studies. This may include teaching courses relevant to modern Latin American studies, or other courses in the individual’s specific area of expertise, in addition to possibly developing these classes for online courses. (25%)

Serve as the Center’s Assistant Director of Academic Programs, which may include, but is not limited to, the following:

Directing the MALAS degree program (45%):
  • Manage application, admission, and decision notification process for the MALAS degree programs, including the MALAS degree, coordinating with the undergraduate coordinator the combined BA and MA program (4+1 program), and the Latin American Studies certificate.
  • Advise students in the MALAS degree program, coordinating with the undergraduate coordinator the combined BA and MA program (4+1 program), and the Latin American Studies certificate.
  • Prepare and manage graduate student and graduate assistant orientation and other orientation activities, which may include activities like the Field Research Orientation and Field Research Workshop.
  • Coordinate and supervise the exit interviews for MALAS students with the Academic Assistant.
  • Coordinate, plan, and supervise recruitment efforts for the programs.
  • Serve as back up to Academic Assistant to coordinate course scheduling, class registration, grade input, and faculty evaluations, among other duties.
Coordinate graduate student funding and assist with annual year financial aid budget (20%):
  • Manage Graduate Assistantship program
    • Supervise graduate assistants to ensure hours are being fulfilled
    • Assist and supervise staff with monitoring and tracking graduate assistant hours
    • Coordinate evaluation process for LAS Graduate assistants
  • Handle FLAS competition
    • Plan and coordinate program activities and competitions
    • Coordinate the AY and Summer FLAS fellowship competitions, including advising the selection committees, leading info sessions, and organizing language proficiency tests
    • Provide guidance on grant guidelines/regulations regarding student funding/fellowships
    • Manage data collection and prepare reports
  • Assist with Field Research grant competition and funding:
    • Assist with administration of summer field research grants and fellowships, prepare reports, and advise students about funding processes and guidelines
Other Administrative duties (10%):
  • Coordinate data collection on LAS alumni tracking
  • May co-supervise one staff position (Academic Assistant) and/or graduate assistants appointed directly to the position
Perform other duties as assigned to help develop and further the mission and expand the reach of the Center for Latin American Studies locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.

Expected Salary:

$60,000 - $70,000

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in the humanities or social sciences with prior advising and teaching experiences. The Center for Latin American Studies particularly welcomes applicants who can contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment through their teaching, mentoring, and professional service.

Bilingual Spanish/English or Portuguese/English
