Director, Employee Experience - Division of Human Resource Services (3343) UPDATED PRIORITY DATE

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President/Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director of Employee Experience is a key member of the Human Resource Services leadership team. This strategic senior leader is responsible for the full spectrum of employee relations and employee experience programs and activities for all non-represented employees of Northern Illinois University. The Director will conduct investigations/inquiries for affirmative action complaints, university grievances, disciplinary matters, and workplace issues/concerns upon request. The Director is also responsible for overseeing all policies, procedures and processes associated with a wide range of complex matters related to employee relations by providing guidance, information and effective workplace strategies to supervisors, supportive professional staff, and civil service employees. This leader is also responsible for developing employee relation/ experience strategies that align with the university’s mission, vision, and values while ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and university policies and procedures. This leader is expected to communicate effectively and to use sound judgement while keeping the SAVP / CHRO properly informed. Effective coordination and working relationships with NIU leadership, HRS, Labor Relations, University Ombudsperson, Personnel Advisors, and external partners at related state agencies and universities is an essential aspect of this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Employee Experience is responsible for a wide range of projects and initiatives regarding the divisional mission and vision of Human Resource Services. As a strategic thought-leader, the incumbent must work effectively with campus partners in all colleges and departments. The incumbent must also collaborate with colleagues in key departments such as General Counsel, Marketing and Communications, Division of Information Technology, Administration and Finance, and Academic Diversity Equity and Inclusion to develop partnerships to jointly advance the university’s mission, vision, and values. Additionally, this leader is responsible for fostering relationships with NIU senior leadership, personnel at relevant external agencies, and peers at other universities.

This position will:
  • Focus on continuous improvement for HRS Employee Experience processes and procedures to identify, define, and direct implementation of processes that are more effective and efficient to enhance the employee experience.
  • Leads work teams to create cohesive, motivated team environment to keep up with the ongoing, new, and changing processes to meet strategic goals of Human Resource Services.
  • Set standards and establish priorities for each unit that align with the strategic initiatives of Human Resource Services.
  • Coach and mentor supervisors and staff and provide feedback to facilitate employee growth, retention, and cross training.
  • Ensure that the unit works efficiently, and work assignments match skill sets of individuals, and professional opportunities are available for all staff.
The Director of Employee Experience requires regular contact with university personnel and administrators at all levels. This position must work effectively with employees across all levels of the university. Controversial and/or sensitive matters are dealt with frequently. Personal interactions include obtaining and/or presenting information, persuading, or advising others, resolving conflicts, and justifying policies and related decisions. The Director of Employee Experience must also build effective relationships with representatives from State agencies that govern regulations, as well as with benefit program administrators and vendors. The Director is also responsible for overseeing all policies, procedures and processes associated with a wide range of complex matters related to employee relations by providing guidance, information and effective workplace strategies to supervisors, faculty, and non-represented staff.

Interpersonal skills relating to effective communication and interaction with non-represented employees and university administrators are essential to succeed in this position. The position will require a considerable degree of initiative, sound judgment, discretion, sensitivity, and the ability to follow through on projects with minimal direct supervision. The role requires flexibility of time, effort, and methods to ensure that staff duties are performed as required. Sound judgement must be exercised daily to solve numerous problems as they arise. The incumbent should work creatively to ensure timely and accurate service to employees.
