About this Opportunity

The School of Art at Ball State University has the unprecedented opportunity to hire in a cohort of new faculty for one-year, non-renewable positions. These hires are targeted towards those newly embarking on an academic career. They are meant to provide teaching experience beyond your institution of record and provide the next step towards your career goals. The committee service and community building expectations will further enhance your resume. There will be additional mentoring support for this cohort.

The School of Art seeks applicants for a full-time contract faculty, Assistant Teaching Professor of Art to teach a range of undergraduate courses within our Studio Art Foundations courses and a specialization within Metals + Jewelry. This is a non-tenure track, non-renewable, one-year, full-time position.

Our Foundation program includes 2D, 3D, 4D and Drawing. Foundations serves a wide range of studio and applied art disciplines. Ideal candidates will bring innovative pedagogy, a broad understanding of contemporary art and design and an interest in interdisciplinary and collaborative practices. Successful candidates will have the ability to incorporate digital tools into these courses and emphasize formal, technical, and conceptual skills.

The School of Art has a strong Studio Art program with disciplinary specializations in Metals, Ceramics, Glass, Sculpture, Intermedia, Photo, Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. We value a diverse curriculum which represents and emphasizes voices that have been traditionally excluded. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to these principles and an approach that centers their teaching on inclusion, diversity, and belonging.

Faculty members are also expected to function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond one’s home unit. All College of Fine Arts faculty are expected to be quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributors to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach a range of Metals + Jewelry courses within a Concentration Major.
  • Ability to teach in Foundations within a minimum of 2 of the 4 following courses: 2D, 3D, 4D, Drawing.
  • Teaching responsibilities in the Metals + Jewelry area will include undergraduate courses from introductory to advanced. Applicants should be proficient in working with a broad range of metalworking techniques, including soldering, enameling, casting, stone-setting, and forming. A working knowledge of laser cutting, 3D printing, and electroforming is preferred for this position.
  • Expectations in Committee Service and Community at the Department level and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Fine Arts degree from an accredited institution by date of appointment.
  • Personal studio practice in Metals + Jewelry and related exhibition record.
Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Practicing studio artist or designer with a record of increasing exhibition/scholarly activities.
  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Interest/involvement with FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory and Education)
