The National Defense University (NDU) is the premier national security institution focused on advanced joint education, leader development and scholarship. Under the direction and leadership of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in coordination with the Director for Joint Force Development, Joint Staff (J-7), the NDU offers a collegial and collaborative academic environment to educate military, international and civilian senior leaders across the whole of government, in critical thinking and the creative application of military power to inform national strategy and globally integrated operations. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is a critical executive member of the University’s executive leadership team. The Provost provides strategic and academic direction for the University and ensures academic excellence for the NDU.

The Provost advises the NDU President on all academic matters within the University and is a key member of the executive leadership team. As the University's Chief Academic Officer (CAO), the Provost works in concert with the NDU President to strengthen the University’s academic reputation as a leading institution of higher education and research. The Provost is responsible for the academic rigor, relevance and efficacy of all academic program curricula design and delivery; research, academic, and enterprise business support functions; and the University’s regional and joint military accreditation.

The Provost also provides leadership to the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS), International Student Management Office (ISMO), NDU Library and Learning Services Center, the Center for Applied Strategic Learning (CASL), Health and Wellness Directorate, and the Office of Academic Affairs (AA).

The ideal candidate will have a strong record of innovation and institutional improvement, familiarity with professional military education, and a demonstrated ability to foster and leverage the capabilities of a diverse workforce. They will also possess executive-level interpersonal skills, self-awareness and emotional maturity. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of senior-level management and leadership experience in an institution of higher learning and demonstrated effectiveness as a leader in higher education.
