Job Summary:

The Accounting Manager reports to the Controller and manages the accounting and financial operations for the department.

Job Duties and Accountabilities:

Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Assists in managing the preparation of financial statements for internal and external parties.
  • Oversees month-end close and monthly financial reporting.
  • Manage the preparation of Annual 571 Reporting for personal property tax.
  • Assists in with preparation of Composite scores.
  • Assists with Quarterly and Annual filing of HEERF.
  • Assists with document preparation for the annual Form 990 filing.
  • Assists with document preparation for the annual 403B audit.

Financial Transactions:

  • Assists in annual financial statement audit in coordination with the University’s external auditors.
  • Track capital costs and capitalization of completed projects.
  • Reviews reconciliation as it pertains to cash, receivables, prepaid, accrued expenses and deferred accounts on the balance sheet.
  • Provides specialized or general calculations and analysis in various accounting functions such as allocations and accruals.

Management of Accounting System of Record:

  • Assists in developing accounting organizational strategies by contributing accounting and financial information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction; establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives.
  • Assists to manage the analysis and implementation of new accounting standards and reporting requirements.
  • Maintain chart of accounts.
  • Fixed assets and depreciation policy review and application.
  • Perform technical research on complex accounting and reporting issues as required.
  • Maintain and analyze general ledger accounts.
  • Ensure proper and consistent financial accounting methodology, techniques, and policies are adopted by the University and used in operations.
  • Assist to establish and/or implement internal controls to protect and preserve the University’s assets.
 

Education and/or Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or equivalent experience - Strongly Preferred.
  • At least 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience – not for profit or higher education – Strongly Preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience with database and accounting computer application systems to supply the most accurate financial information.
  • Knowledge of large ERP systems (Oracle, Great Plains, Workday, Lawson) – Required.
  • Must have excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills to work with all levels of the University - Required.
  • Ability to work well both independently and with others and respond sensitively to clients, staff, and volunteers - Required.
  • Familiarity and high comfort level with web-based technology and proficiency in Microsoft Office software are required.
