Math & Science Support Coordinator

Job Summary

This is a 12-month staff position responsible for developing and delivering a full range of academic support services to students and peer tutors. The Coordinator provides administrative supervision and assessment of programmatic initiatives; partners and collaborates with schools, departments, faculty and staff; and works with students one-on-one to ensure academic success and persistence. The successful candidate will have a background in math or the sciences and act as the Learning Center’s departmental liaison to the math and science departments, among others. This position is part of the Learning Center team and reports to the Learning Center Director.

Essential Functions

In addition to supervising student workers and working with peer tutors, the Math & Science Coordinator:
  • Leads specific Learning Center programs, projects, and events by coordinating meetings, ensuring execution, and performing ongoing evaluations (examples might include transfer initiatives, academic workshops, academic coaching, and the Long Night Against Procrastination).
  • Contributes to and delivers student preprofessional development opportunities for peer tutors as well as provides ongoing mentoring for math and science tutors.
  • Works with Learning Center staff and our Academic Case Manager to develop, implement, track, and assess student interventions with a focus on math and science course.
  • Works directly with students identified through the early alert system or other means as being at risk for leaving the university and connects them with appropriate academic resources, including Learning Center staff and tutors.
  • Collects and tracks data to provide insights into student-level use and needs as well as the need for new Learning Center interventions and institutional partnerships.
  • Supports varied operations of the Learning Center, including programmatic assessment.
  • Creates and updates marketing materials and strategies, including digital content for Learning Center webpages and social media, by working with student workers and Learning Center staff.
Other Duties and Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with a strong liberal arts component.
  • Experience working in a learning center, math center or academic support center and/or knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices to support learning.
  • Highly skilled at multi-tasking and prioritizing tasks as dictated by deadlines and importance.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills to interface with a wide range of students, faculty, parents, and donors within the university community and beyond.
  • Commitment to the academic success of a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in the liberal arts and sciences or in a professional program with a strong liberal arts component.
  • Expertise in a content area such as math or science.
  • Ability to tutor statistics (to fill in for peer tutors as needed).
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
