Collects samples and administers medication and treatments, in addition to feeding and maintenance responsibilities, to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and support research and instruction.

Responsibilities

This position requires the ability:
  • to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and lift 50 lb;
  • to wear a surgical mask and nitrile gloves while on duty;
  • to work in animal rooms with possible exposure to animal hair, dander, etc.; and
  • to work some weekends and holidays in rotation with other team members.
The successful applicant must complete animal care certification at the hiring institution. Training provided as needed.

30% A. Performance of routine animal husbandry tasks

A1. Feed and water all assigned animals as required.

A2. Handle and restrain animals by appropriate methods.

A3. Transport animals, supplies and equipment between rooms and other facilities.

A4. Monitor animal room temperatures and humidity daily and initiate corrective actions.

A5. Implement approved environmental enrichment practices. Suggest animal enrichment improvements to management.

A6. Clean and sanitize facility support areas, animal rooms, cages, and accessory equipment.

A7. Operate cagewashers, autoclaves, and other equipment as assigned.

A8. Follow written rules and verbal instructions regarding safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

A9. Promptly report occupational health and safety problems to the supervisor.

A10. Supervise part-time undergraduate employees in completion of tasks.

20% B. Monitor and assess animal health

B1. Observe all animals in assigned rooms daily for signs of injury or sickness. Report potentially sick or injured animals to investigators and the Campus Veterinarian.

B2. Administer oral, topical, and/or intraperitoneal/subcutaneous injectable medications as directed by investigators or veterinary staff.

B3. Monitor and document animal health following veterinary treatments. Follow up with veterinary staff if animal health is not improving.

B4. Euthanize animals at direction of supervisor(s).

20% C. Conduct squirrel colony/breeding facility procedures

C1. Perform tissue collection for DNA identification. May include tail snip, ear punch or toe clip.

C2. Program and install subdermal microchips for identification.

C3. Set up mating pairs as directed by principal investigators and supervisors.

C4. Care for pregnant and nursing dams and wean offspring appropriately.

C5. Prepare animals for shipment, including documentation and shipping cages.

C6. Pack animals for shipment and meet the transport company pick-up at designated time and location on campus.

15% D. Assist with Research Services

D1. Collect animal weights.

D2. Perform rodent blood sample collection.

10% E. Perform detailed record keeping with no directive from supervision.

E1. Maintain daily animal facility room activity logs records and census sheets. Monthly transfer these to Lab Animal Manager. Rectify any discrepancies.

E2. Ensure that animals are properly identified and accounted for.

E3. Maintain cage cards, animal health, and breeding records.

E4. Maintain databases for study and breeding animals.

E5. Perform other record keeping to ensure animal research compliance is maintained at all times.

E6. Organize work shifts at least two (2) weeks in advance to ensure daily animal care regardless of holiday, vacation, weather, etc.

5% F. Perform other animal care duties as assigned by supervisor.

F1. Interact with other animal care units e.g. off-campus clients receiving colony animals.

F2. Prepare for facility inspections.

F3. Inventory supplies.

F4. Participate in interviews and hiring of part-time undergraduate student employees.

Qualifications Required:

Minimum H.S. diploma.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
