The Department of Marketing, Communication and Community Relations (MCCR) is part of the Division of Enrollment Management, Communication and Student Affairs (EMCSA). EMCSA units will work creatively and diligently to attain optimal enrollments, enhance student development and success, and coordinate enrollment activities with academic units and the overall mission of the institution, with the purpose of ensuring seamless systems and positive experiences for our students. The division will consistently support the University's efforts to enhance its reputation as a premier comprehensive regional university. EMCSA departments aspire to become the service leaders on campus in pursuit of ongoing enrollment, retention, and student affairs successes. We will continue to build the staff structures, systems, and development opportunities necessary to achieve the division's goals. MCCR serves as the campus source for communications with internal and external constituents and plays a leading role in conveying CSU Pueblo's mission and image to stakeholders. We strive for accuracy in information, consistency in presentation, and quality in product.
Description of Job
Under the direction of the Executive Director
of Marketing, Communications and Community
Relations, the Director of
Communications/Public Information Officer
(PIO) will plan, implement and
evaluate effective communication strategies to
promote the mission and vision of
the university. The ideal candidate will
possess resourcefulness, experience, and energy
to improve CSU Pueblo’s image,
visibility, and support with its key
constituents through creation and implementation
of specific communications initiatives.
This person implements projects that
address the goals and objectives of
the University’s communication plans to insure a
consistent and cohesive message through a variety
of communication formats.
Primary Duties
- Works with the Executive Director to launch strategic Communications initiatives, specifically for targeted demographics, utilizing creative and cost-effective print and electronic communications. Serves on the Enrollment Initiatives Committee.
- Serves as chief content developer and curator for the university: identifying, writing, editing and curating campus stories for university publications, website, digital marketing efforts, media statements, press releases, etc., Ensures formal communication adheres to AP style standards.
- Leads media relations efforts for CSU Pueblo - serving as primary media contact and spokesperson, and intake for campus press release requests and prioritization. Builds positive media relationships with local, regional and national media. Organizes press events as needed.
- Leads and manages the university’s social media efforts, including developing content, providing direction and leadership with campus entities and their social media efforts and monitoring and responding to external and internal submissions and postings.
- Works with the Executive Director to support the President and other Cabinet members in preparing communications to both internal and external audiences.
- Assists in the implementation of university crisis communications plans. Provides support and backup to the Executive Director in times of crisis – serving as designated Public Information Officer within incident command structure. Works with other PIOs in the city and region to build relationships for a crisis incident. Serves as a member of the Campus Safety Committee.
- Leads internal communication efforts including production of regular communications and maintaining the campus e-newsletter (E-mail Digest) and website news room and Wolf Den.
- Manages the University’s Digital Signage program, including oversight with IT of new installations, creation of content, training of new users, as well as monitoring and troubleshooting system performance.
- Assists with planning and coordination of special events, including but not limited to Commencement, Veterans’ Day, Faculty/Staff Recognition, holiday receptions, Convocation, President’s Gala, Colorado State Fair, etc.
- Serves as back up to the Executive Director and assists MCCR staff with University projects as required. Meets with the Institution of Cannabis Research monthly to provide communication support.
Ancillary Duties
- Manages Pepsi product requests and provides marketing/swag ordering assistance in conjunction with Creative Director on brand management.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in English, Mass Communications, Marketing, or a related field
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Exceptional verbal, written, editing and organizational skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, Hootsuite, Sprout or other website and social media mgmt. tools
- Demonstrated success using the web, email, and social media as digital marketing tools.
- Three years’ experience in a communications or publication relations position
- Experience in media relations with local, state, and regional media
- Experience serving as official spokesperson for an organization with members of the media
- Experience in special events implementation
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- FEMA IS-100 (Intro. to Incident Command System) training
- PRSA or IABC member
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Photoshop, Sharepoint Designer, Content Management System), HTML
- Marketing or communications experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience in strategic planning and implementation of sophisticated communications and marketing programs.
- Experience in a position that required management of multiple projects and deadlines.
