Job Description Summary

The Assistant or Associate Director of Admission and Diversity Initiatives is a key member of the Fowler School of Law Admissions Team. This position is primarily responsible for recruitment, enrollment management, and counseling prospective and newly admitted law students. The Assistant/Associate Director recruits prospective law students and plans and manages admissions related events.

This position will participate with the processing, reviewing, and evaluating of applications for admissions. The Assistant/Associate Director will participate in the development of marketing materials, data management, and statistical reporting. This position travels extensively throughout California and the U.S. from September through December and also travels occasionally in the spring and summer.

Responsibilities

Event Planning and Coordination
  • Plan, manage, and implement a variety of admission related events on- and off-campus, including open house events, diversity recruitment and pipeline events, pre-law events, open houses and seminars, special events for newly admitted students, campus visitation programs, law school tours, electronic web-based discussions with prospective and new students, and other related events.
Application Processing and Evaluation
  • Participate in the overall processing and review of applications for admission.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean with the processing and initial evaluation and assessment of JD admission applications, including transfer and visiting applicants.
Recruitment
  • Travel extensively to local, regional and national graduate and professional school fairs and law school forums to represent Chapman’s Fowler School of Law and to recruit prospective students.
  • Manage and support initiatives to increase diversity of law students and to provide programming opportunities for underrepresented students.
  • Participate in panel discussions and conduct presentations for prospective law students, pre-law societies, and undergraduate institutions.
  • Assist in the efforts to identify and foster new relationships and deepen existing relationships with advisors and faculty at feeder schools.
  • Assist in the coordination of the recruitment travel calendar.


Counseling and Advising
  • Advise prospective law students, formal applicants, and potential transfer and visiting students on the value of a legal education, the process and procedures for applying to Chapman’s Fowler School of Law, their enrollment admissibility, general financial aid matters, and general preparation for legal study.
  • Advise newly admitted students in preparation for law school matriculation on general transition issues, including housing, orientation process, course schedules, registration procedures, etc.
  • Coordinate and lead efforts of communicating with and advising students on the wait-list throughout the entire admission cycle.
Data and Enrollment Management, Reporting, and Troubleshooting
  • Participate in the data collection and management of reports and statistical analyses as well as the preparation of responses to various surveys and questionnaires.
  • Develop general knowledge of ACES2/ UNITE to support enrollment management and data reporting.
Development and Publication of Marketing Materials
  • Assist with Law Admissions marketing efforts to prospective and admitted students, as requested by the Assistant Dean or Director.
  • Assist with maintaining published and printed materials, including Law Admissions Office webpages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

The breadth and depth of the relevant experience will determine the Assistant or Associate Director level: For the Assistant Director position, the following experience is required: a minimum of two years of professional experience preferably in an academic environment or an admissions office. For the Associate Director position, the following experience is required: (1) J.D. or advanced degree from an accredited institution, and (2) a minimum of two years of experience in a law school admission office as an Assistant Director (or an equivalent or higher role). In addition -
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Must demonstrate transferable knowledge and skills in admissions if recent employment is not directly related to the duties of the position.
  • Strong oral communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to communicate and present positive information about the Fowler School of Law in a professional, persuasive and effective manner.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills to create, prepare, proofread and edit clear and concise, grammatically correct business correspondence.
  • Ability to travel extensively, including overnight and out of state, including the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information in a professional and respectful manner at all times. Knowledge and understanding of FERPA rules.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor; ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain professionalism at all times.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University, including diverse groups of prospective students.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork, able to demonstrate sound judgment and strong problem solving skills
  • Advanced organizational, time management and process management skills.
  • Demonstrated computer experience in word processing, PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheets and databases preferably in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Technical ability to learn and use enterprise software.
Desired Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Knowledge of higher education marketing trends at the graduate professional school level and in relation to legal education.
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues at the graduate degree level and in relation to legal education.
  • Demonstrated ability to form relationships with students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the law and engage them in the admissions process.
  • Demonstrated skills in the planning, development, implementation, and coordination of student recruitment, retention, and support programs, including event planning.
  • Working knowledge of Chapman University policies and procedures that pertain to duties associated with this position.
