WHO WE ARE

The department of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) leads the enterprise-wide forecasting efforts of the university ($11B annual revenues).  Our team supports the continued development of the Enterprise Forecast Model and analysis of Enterprise financial data.  We are responsible for the annual budget and business planning process for the Business & Finance organization ($607M), as well as the consolidation of the university’s annual budgets. FP&A works with other university finance and operations personnel to analyze forecast results, perform data analysis and financial reporting.

FP&A offers support and assistance to other university units with a variety of services such as developing financial/budgets, participation in key initiatives, streamlining financial processes, and providing other services as requested.  We prepare presentations for senior management that may be utilized for delivery to the university Board of Regents.  FP&A is also responsible for the university's recharge review and approval process and consolidation of the Enterprise financial results.

JOB SUMMARY

The University of Michigan Finance organization is seeking a senior manager of enterprise forecasting and analysis to join our central finance team.  This key role is the subject matter expert on forecasting that plays a key role in providing data and analysis to leadership to support strategic decisions on financial matters.  This position will provide leadership for this function, relying on a complex structure of data points that are internally or externally sourced.

This position will drive strategic recommendations for continued refinements to the university’s enterprise forecast model, and drive toward implementation of approved changes in the forecast model methodologies.

As the leader of the enterprise forecasting and analysis function, you will partner across the organization to perform analysis, evaluate findings, prepare summaries, and make recommendations to senior management about the financial implications of proposed key drivers, future period assumptions and impact to the financials.  You will be the lead for the long-range financial planning, and coordinate with the Sr. Manager of Financial Planning on the Business and Finance budget processes.  Position requires coordination with all Business & Finance units, central support units, the Office of Budget and Planning, and the Flint and Dearborn campus finance personnel.  Position will supervise 2-3 staff as the department is expanding.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage enterprise financial forecasting and analysis activities to identify risks and opportunities and contribute to the achievement of the organization's short and long-term financial goals.
  • Coordinate, design, and lead the development of refinements to the enterprise forecast model, partnering across central finance, leadership, and the operating units of the organization.
  • Develop and promote innovative approaches for the use of financial data throughout all levels of the organization to meet operational / business partner needs. This includes the incorporation of activity level data and benchmarking into financial analyses.
  • Lead other analyses efforts to provide optimal finance data for informed decision making, which includes leadership of staff supporting enterprise, and business and finance metrics.
  • Interface with University finance leaders and their staff on pertinent financial analysis and special project support.
  • Lead, evaluate, and independently manage financial professionals in a manner that fosters trust and partnership.
  • Manage financial reports and analytical metrics, including the development of requirements and implementation from start to finish.
  • Collaborate with other areas of the university including key finance and operational representatives from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn and Michigan Medicine Finance to prepare forecasts and complete ad hoc analyses and other deliverables for senior leadership.
  • Communicate financial-related matters and education through different mediums across many audiences in a clear, action-oriented manner.
  • Will lead efforts to integrate the forecast model into a new budget tool with a fiscal year 2023 implementation date.
  • Must be able to provide training in financial management and forecasting to unit administrators and other designated personnel.
  • Take a leadership role with special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in Accounting or Finance, or a related field.  Five or more years with extensive understanding of accounting and financial principles, preferably in large, complex organizations.  Experience in leading financial forecasting for a large, complex organization. Considerable progressively responsible accounting, budget, and / or financial analysis experience; in depth knowledge of analysis techniques and presentation development.  Effective communication, customer service orientation and presentation skills.  Demonstrated proficiency in problem solving and leading financial strategy.  Candidate must be detail oriented and organized, as well as having the ability to utilize spreadsheet software to analyze data.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field
  • Five to seven years of Financial Planning and Analysis for an organization(s) in excess of $500M
  • Experience with university finance and operations
  • Demonstrated existing comprehensive knowledge of the University of Michigan organizational structure, culture, operations and procedures or the ability to quickly learn this information
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse range of projects requiring detailed analysis, creative and practical problem solving and sound judgement
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment. Proven excellent customer service skills
  • Familiarity with budget tool(s) and strong Excel skills

PLEASE NOTE WORK SCHEDULE:  This is a full-time position; Monday through Friday.  As part of the University of Michigan Finance Division Future of Work initiative, this position may work onsite, remote, or hybrid (both onsite work and remotely) based on the business needs of the unit.

The Finance Division reports to the Associate Vice President for Finance and the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. We are comprised of several units including Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis, Financial Operations, Procurement Services, Sponsored Programs and Treasury.
