Job Description

The Career Advisor for Career and Professional Development Services (CPDS) prepares and assists our diverse student population to ensure they are career ready upon graduation. The Career Advisor counsels students and new alumni through meaningful career & internship exploration conversations in small & large group settings, as well as, one-on-one advising.

 

This position will be responsible for coordinating and implementing programs and workshops in a fast-paced, student centered, data informed, team environment across the university. This will include designing customized workshops, resources, mentoring opportunities, and programming focused on connecting students with post-graduation career opportunities inclusive of internships, full-time employment, national service, graduate school, and entrepreneurial ventures.

 

ASU students and new grads are making life-changing decisions-thus, Career Advisor staff must understand and utilize available resources to provide individualized solutions. They must also evaluate how well their programs are meeting the needs of the students, new graduates, and university partners-they must use this assessment to inform their future programming decisions, outreach efforts and employer connections.

Salary Range

$45,000 - $48,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Direct Student/New Graduate Support

 

  • Engages with diverse students and new alumni on a regular basis, both in-person and in virtual settings (such as hosting webinars, conducting virtual 1:1 advising, and online chats).
  • Designs and delivers career preparation workshops in partnership with Career & Industry Specialists internal to department utilizing direct feedback provided by employer partners.
  • Advises students and new graduates regarding their interests, values, skills and qualifications related to career decision making, occupational research and preparing and conducting, effective internship and/or job search, and researching and applying to graduate programs.
  • Advises students on writing resumes, preparing job and internship search materials, developing a professional digital portfolio, managing social media professional presence, networking, developing interview skills and application materials.
  • Designs and delivers career and professional development presentations/workshops, in both small and large settings, to ASU classes, student clubs, professional organizations, and the community.
  • Supports department or university-wide initiatives related to improving effective delivery of service to student/new grad populations from CPDS.

 

Administrative

  • Conducts ongoing research through benchmarking peer institutions, connecting with professional associations, and participation in career and professional development conferences to understand and provide information about post-graduation opportunities for students.
  • Orients a variety of users such as students, parents and university partners regarding purposes and goals of CPDS, the Handshake online career platform, ASU Mentor Network, and facilitates CPDS trainings and overviews.
  • Regularly records and reports on data related to appointments, event participation, student assessments, and other position responsibilities.
  • Stays current, understands and shares relevant student engagement and employer hiring data with key stakeholders across assigned liaison college(s), EOSS and community partners.
  • Prepares materials and programs promoting CPDS and serves on university committees that support recruitment, retention and student success.

 

Days and Schedule: Career and Professional Development Services serves students and new graduates virtually, in the office and at events that typically take place during the timeframe of Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with some additional evenings and weekends required for events, flexible advising hours, etc.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field AND one year of experience in a related area; OR, Bachelor's degree in a related field AND five years-experience in a related area; OR, Nine years of progressively responsible experience in a related area; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience preparing and delivering engaging presentations to audiences of varying sizes and modalities
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and database management systems such as Outlook, PowerPoint, Google Drive
  • Experience in work that requires attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience in prioritizing varied workload and meeting multiple, overlapping deadlines
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse student or adult-learner populations

Working Environment

  • Adhering to Career and Professional Development Services office dress code.
  • Lifting and carrying materials, as well as, pulling and pushing carts of up to 30 lbs.
  • Additional movement requirements include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods

Career and Professional Development Services provides commensurate programs, services, and resources at all four Phoenix area locations, as well as ASU Online. Staff work collaboratively with CPDS leadership and staff at each location, and as part of the Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) Vice Presidential area.
