Directs all administrative, educational, and supervisory tasks of all campus residence life functions. Demonstrates significant interaction and responsibility with all functional areas of the housing operation including staff supervision, administrative duties, student discipline, stimulating the development of educational, social and personal growth programs, group advising, promoting the safety and welfare of all residents, and individual counseling.

Responsibilities

The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the administrative leadership of the on-campus residential life program and for fostering a student living environment that supports and complements the mission of the university. Residence Life has a revenue generating capacity of 3,100 in 10 residence halls with 570,125 square feet of living space (4,015,961 gross square footage across all residence halls) and an operating budget of $14.5 million. Furthermore, the Director supervises the Gruenhagen Conference Center, a full-service, year-round conference center that annually supports approximately 85 conferences and groups. The Director has responsibility for supervision of personnel, management of fiscal resources, facility operations and use, problem solving, administration of room assignments, and review, development and implementation of policies and programs impacting the on-campus living community. The Director must also ensure that students are involved in shared student governance by maintaining positive working relationships and active involvement with hall governance. The Director will supervise and participate in after-hours on-call emergency response and will be required to attend weekend and evening events.

Provide vision and leadership to the Department of Residence Life 40%
  • Coordinate the availability of resources necessary for the effective delivery of services and programs. Ensure all three function areas - conference services, residential education, and housing operations - work seamlessly to provide superior service
  • Develop and monitor activities, policies, and procedures supporting the mission and purpose of the department and university
  • Maintain 10-year facilities plan for residence halls (e.g. significant maintenance and renovations)
  • Coordinate with Facilities relating to planning and construction, custodial services and building and grounds
  • Direct the preparation of departmental annual report
  • Oversee room selection process and residential occupancy
  • Oversee the Service Level Agreement for Information Technology
  • Coordinate departmental assessment efforts
  • University liaison to residence halls on Fond du Lac and Fox Valley campuses
  • Position will involve some travel out-of-town for UW System Housing Director meetings and professional conferences
  • Directs and evaluates residence life programs for institutional student housing communities to ensure alignment with academic initiatives, unit objectives, and strategic plans
  • Serves as the primary liaison for the unit among internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit in the absence of a Director
  • Advises institutional leadership on housing activities
  • Cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with Facilities, Public Safety and Emergency Management, Counseling and Psychological Services, and other Student Affairs and Campus Life, and College offices
Supervision of staff 20%
  • Directly supervise four Associate Directors and one Coordinator
  • Indirectly supervise 20 professional staff and 160 student staff
  • Communicate staff issues or challenges to supervisor
  • Coordinate staff development activities and retreats
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked
Review development, and implementation of residence hall policies and procedures 10%
  • Annually update the residence hall contract
  • Annually update the Community Rights and Responsibilities Handbook
  • Oversee residence hall opening and closing
  • Review exceptions to the two-year residency requirement for undergraduate students.
  • Oversee contract release process
  • Oversee coordination of systems and timelines dealing with assignment procedures, billing, payroll, and other procedures
Fiscal / Budget Management 10%
  • Oversee $14.5 million budget for Residence Life
  • Exercise full signatory authority for all departmental budgets, purchase requisitions, capital expenditure and employee payroll
  • Monitor financial and occupancy reports
  • Ensure that fiscal and budget polices are appropriately developed, reviewed, and followed
  • Formulate annual and long-range budgets
  • Make recommendations regarding annual room rates, rate schedules, and long-range funding
  • Plan and forecast revenue and expenses
Student conduct, crisis response, student advocacy 10%
  • Serve as appeals officer for residence hall student conduct process
  • Collaborate closely with the Dean of Students Office, Counseling Services, the Student health Center, and University Police
  • Assist in follow up for the Student Care Team
  • Assist in coordinated response to bias incidents
  • Assist in coordinated response to Title IX incidents/complaints
  • Seek proactive measures to advocate and care for on campus students
Student Affairs Leadership 10%
  • Provide leadership to Social Justice Institute
  • Supervise and participate in after-hours on-call emergency response
  • Be visible and active participant in campus-wide engagements, such as Homecoming, Reeve Memorial Union events, athletics, and student or faculty sponsored activities including weekend and evening engagements
  • Serve on search and screen committees for positions outside the department
  • Provide service to the university through participation on standing and ad hoc committees
  • Track and report out annually the retention and academic success of on-campus students
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Required:
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice
  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field
  • Experience in supervising fulltime staff
  • Demonstrated experience in residence life
