W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation (WAFCFC) invites applications for the Budget Analyst II to process the financial records for the WAFCFC and the Montana Forest and Conservation Experiment Station (MFCES). This position is responsible for: data entry, payroll processing, invoice and form processing, the creation of detailed financial reports, and analysis and reconciliation of State, designated, auxiliary and grant budgets. Financial guidance and support are provided to the WAFCFC, MFCES, faculty, staff, and others, including assistance with budget annual preparation of the WAFCFC budget. This position provides accounting and grant preparation and administration for WAFCFC.

The position is also responsible for the timely processing of grant proposals including the development of grant budgets, reconciliation of grants, providing timely budget reports to Principal Investigators and general grant maintenance while performing these tasks with a great attention to detail. Other grant related duties include cost match and time and effort reporting. This position responsible for entry and update to the database for the Research, Education and extension project online reporting system (REEport) used for annual McIntire Stennis reporting. WAFCFC Budget Analysts oversee data compilation, analysis, and preparation of the annual McIntire Stennis report.

This position will work both as a team member and independently and must take initiative as a self-starter with the tasks listed above to be a liaison between the W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation Accounting Office and the Office of Research and Sponsored Program pre-award office and post-award office to ensure compliance with UM and external policies in grants management and administration.

This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge and application of University and W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation policies and procedures; develop working knowledge and proficiency in the use of UMDW, Banner, and GrizMart and other University computer programs; and develop working knowledge and ability to work proficiently in REEport database and reporting system.

Required Skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform financial work with minimal errors.
  • Fundamental knowledge of accounting and budget management practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy, high volume transactional environment.
  • Demonstrated high degree of proficiency in the operation of personal computers and related word processing, spreadsheet, and database software (Excel, Word, Microsoft Office, Outlook).
  • Experience in developing and maintaining excel workbooks to track actual costs and expense projections to budget.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in processing grant proposals, including the development of grant budgets, reconciliation of grants, time and effort reporting, cost match reporting, timely budget reports to Principal Investigators and general grant maintenance.
  • Ability to learn and decipher sponsor guidelines for grant proposal development and financial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor account and grant activity and reconcile accounts.
  • Demonstrated consistency, clarity, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain detailed financial information and concepts on a level “non-accounting” people will understand.
  • Ability to consult with faculty and administrators and act as a resource to help them achieve their department/project goals while meeting sponsor requirements as applicable.
  • Ability to understand university, state, federal and accounting practices and budget processes.
  • Ability to develop solutions to complex grant administration problems.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently to achieve goals.
  • Adaptability and capacity to meet challenges and learn new skills
  • A positive and constructive attitude, ability to interact patiently and respectfully with co-workers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contract management.
  • Knowledge of federal forms required to submit budgets and the ability to review a completed proposal.
Minimum Required Experience
  • Experience to perform at this level is typically acquired with a High School diploma and four (4) years experience working in an accounting, budget and grants management capacity; or an Associate’s Degree in a related field, and two (2) years of experience working in an accounting capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree with an emphasis in Accounting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll management and processing.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $18.876/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and may be different from the posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
