California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the nation’s largest labor union and professional association of registered nurses. CNA/NNU’s unique education programs equip union nurses with the information, analysis, and critical thinking skills they need to effectively fight for safe and democratic workplaces, an equitable health care system, healthy communities, and a just world.

We seek an experienced educator ready to build RNs’ movement for worker power, universal health care, and social justice. Ideal candidates have strong research skills and demonstrated success using creative teaching methods to help learners turn knowledge into collective action.

This is more than a traditional labor education position. In addition to educating nurses about challenges in organizing and bargaining campaigns, educators develop and teach material which requires familiarity with key issues facing BIPOC workers and communities, including health inequality, as well as the ability to address a broad range of topics to help to prepare CNA/NNU members and movement allies to navigate some of the world’s most challenging health concerns, from economic inequality, racial injustice, and gender inequity to climate change and global health disparities.

The Educator will work primarily across two program areas:

  • Continuing Education classes and workshops that help nurses connect their day-to-day work experience to the broader economic and political forces that shape the health care system; bring perspective on patient advocacy as a social justice practice; and explore avenues for improving the health and safety of nurses, patients, and communities through collective action.

  • Political Education workshops and webinars for NNU members, labor and social movement allies, and the public.

Position: This is a permanent full-time position that is currently remote but will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area after the pandemic. The position is best suited for a nimble activist-educator who works collaboratively and is also capable of working independently when developing class content that will be delivered to both small (10-40 participants) and large (200+) audiences.

Teaching and travel obligations vary according to organizational need, calendar, and program growth.

Salary and Benefits: Excellent salary depending on experience with benefits including full family health coverage and a generous pension.

Basic Qualifications: An advanced degree in a relevant discipline or interdisciplinary field; a commitment to social justice unionism (labor movement experience preferred); eagerness to grow the nurse-led movement for health care justice; experience communicating complex ideas to general audiences; a valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

We encourage applicants from all disciplines, particularly: Labor Studies, Political Economy/Economics, History, Feminist/Critical Gender Studies, Critical Race/Ethnic Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Medical Anthropology/Sociology.

Candidates with an MA are encouraged to apply. If a candidate has a PhD in a relevant field, they would also teach classes in NNU’s University Program, which offers a unique online certificate program in Women’s Global Health Leadership in partnership with Rutgers. Semester-length, credit-bearing classes focus on a wide range of topics related to global health and justice. Classes contain a mix of Rutgers undergraduates and NNU members who receive scholarships to attend.

To ApplyFill out our one-page online application form and submit a resumé, cover letter, a brief writing sample, and a sample syllabus and/or an outline of a one-day educational workshop (including teaching objectives and intended audience).

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is a premiere organization of registered nurses, one of the nation’s fastest growing unions in the U.S., and a strong, progressive voice for nurses, patients, and healthcare workers around the world.

CNA/NNU is committed to Equal Opportunity, and to considering applicants of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, national origins, ethnicities, and religions. We encourage people from diverse backgrounds and experiences with a commitment to collective union power and nurses’ professional values of care, compassion, and community to apply.
