Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Facility Services: Electrical Shop is now hiring two (2) Electrician, Seniors. This position installs, repairs, and maintains university electrical systems in NAU campus structures to ensure they are operating effectively. This position also inspects university electrical equipment, diagnoses problems, and makes necessary adjustments. The successful candidates will monitor and maintain records of university electrical needs and compile maintenance reports with information related to university electrical systems to be used for recommendations.

The Electrician, Senior leads in repairs and maintenance of Campus Electrical Infrastructure on Academic and Res Life Building including, but not limited to exterior and interior wiring, street lighting, panels, breakers, SES, transformers, branch circuit wiring, underground receptacles, switches, equipment power. The will also provides estimates and oversees customer requests, electrical upgrades or changes and also works with other trades/ customers/ project managers on campus projects.

Campus Lighting/Power Repairs and maintenance - 30%
  • Street Lighting repairs and maintenance infrastructure.
  • Academic/ Res Life power repairs and maintenance.
  • Upgrading Electrical/ Lighting Systems as needed.
  • Repairs, maintains, replaces, installs and tests both high- and low-voltage electrical/electronic systems, circuits, and equipment.
  • Inspects equipment and diagnoses performance and malfunctions.
  • Performs complex wiring assignments.
  • Oversees the production of reports and communications to provide information on necessary adjustments to campus electrical systems.
  • Performs electrical services to ensure campus facilities are properly maintained.
  • Receives and responds to electrical maintenance requests from campus members regarding NAU facilities.

Works on approved electrical estimates - 30%
  • Meets with customer/ Trades/ Project Manager.
  • Schedules and orders and prepares materials for estimate.
  • Works on Electrical Project to completion.
  • Performs electrical services to ensure campus facilities are properly maintained.

MCC/Power Installations - 20%
  • Troubleshoot MCC circuits.
  • Repair power for HVAC Disconnects.
  • Repair power for HVAC air compressors.
  • Installs power, light, electronic, and control circuits. Provides technical assistance to lower level maintenance electricians.

Estimates campus electrical projects - 15%
  • Provides Estimates for Campus Electrical Projects.
  • Gets material quotes for estimates.
  • Process estimates for supervision/customer review.
  • Works from blueprints, technical plans, and sketches to install and inspect equipment.
  • Inspects construction and maintenance projects for adherence to building code and NAU Design Guidelines and Technical standards.
  • Performs calculations for estimates of work.

Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of four years federally approved technical training program in electrical repair and maintenance AND
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of University Electrical work process and policies.
  • Knowledge of commercial wiring process and Electrical blue print interpretation.
  • Knowledge of techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical work.
  • Including: Street Lighting Infrastructure, Lighting Control Systems, Breaker Panel Upgrades,
  • Motor supply and control wiring, Commercial wiring practices and NEC requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task as well as lead others in the field.
  • Leadership skills, including employee motivation, trustworthiness, creativity, and integrity.
  • Knowledge of equipment and materials usage and maintenance, supplies, equipment, and/ or
  • Services ordering and inventory control.
  • Awareness and demonstration to NAU's EEO/ Affirmative Action and Safe Working/ Learning Environment
  • Understanding of NAU's policies and procedures and setting examples of such.
  • Effective communication skills, the ability to craft emails and other written documents,

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticpated salary range is $47,634 to $55,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
