Dean, Special Academic Programs

Class Description

The purpose of this class is to provide academic leadership of assigned school or academic program.

Compensation within the posted range is determined by a candidate's education level and/or years of experience in the field.  Generally, employees are hired in the lower third of the scale.  

Minimum Requirements

Earned Master's degree, doctorate preferred. Minimum of four years of full-time teaching experience at the collegiate level strongly preferred. Minimum of three years of supervisory experience, the experiences may be concurrent. Knowledge of principles of pedagogy, assessment, and student success required.  

Class Specific Essential Duties

  1. Develop, articulate, and present the vision for assigned school or academic program.
  2. Hire, evaluate, and supervise assigned staff.
  3. Represent the school and the College with students, parents, professional organizations, and other relevant constituencies.
  4. Provide leadership in relation to college-wide goals by initiating, sustaining, delivering, or eliminating academic programs.
  5. Supervise the creation of timely class schedules (Honors, ACDV) based on student needs and institutional resources.
  6. Review/revise existing curriculum and develop new curriculum where necessary.
  7. Oversee budget preparation and management.
  8. Plan, conduct, and evaluate professional development and training for faculty and staff as needed.

Position Specific Essential Duties

  1. Serve as the chief advisor to the Provost and Vice President of instruction in the administration of the instructional areas of the program, including Honors, a future Honors College, Libraries, High School collaborations, Academic Development (ACDV), as well as other programs as assigned.
  2. Address strategic initiatives regarding the future direction of areas within the College.
  3. Ensure proper course and program evaluation and assessment through development of program and learning objectives, appropriate formative and summative research strategies, data collection, analysis, report writing, and program planning to ensure a continuous loop for academic excellence. 
  4. Seek external funding for the areas supervised and provide support for initiatives including Achieving the Dream and other student success partnerships.
  5. Seek grant opportunities for special programs and oversee the Mellon Grant in collaboration with other academic Deans.
  6. Support and/or coordinate the design and delivery of professional development activities for faculty, staff, and advisors involved in Honors, academic development, learning communities, and other related areas.
  7. Support the design, implementation and assessment of student success initiatives, including transfer to upper division.
  8. Oversee the development of special projects and ensure they are then delivered in the appropriate academic area.
