    EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

    PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Assistant Professor of Sustainable Systems is a tenure track position in the School of Agriculture, Community, and the Environment which is in the College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences at Kentucky State University (KSU). The position will have a combination of research (50%), Extension (25%), and Teaching (25%) components.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Assistant Professor of Sustainable Systems is a tenure track position at Kentucky State University in the school of Agriculture, Communities, and the Environment within the College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences. This Ph.D. level position will lead cooperative research and Extension projects in the field of sustainable systems. Areas of interest include but are not limited to a circular economy, corporate social responsibility, energy and climate economics, food/water/energy nexus, green buildings, resilient and sustainable green infrastructure, Environmental impacts or risk assessment, sustainable mobility, sustainable business and supply chains, system dynamics and complex systems, carbon neutrality, minimizing water consumption, reusing and recycling materials to reduce waste and sourcing renewable electricity that impact stakeholders. This position will support stakeholders who include small-scale and minority farmers, urban farmers, small-scale environmental consultants, and urban planners, as well as support the fermentation and distillation Sciences industry in Kentucky. The successful candidate will assist in teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    1. Research will focus on areas such as corporate social responsibility, energy and climate economics, food/water/energy nexus, green buildings, resilient and sustainable infrastructure, risk assessment, sustainable mobility, sustainable supply chains, system dynamics and complex systems, carbon neutrality, minimizing water consumption, reusing and recycling materials to reduce waste and sourcing renewable electricity that impact stakeholders.

    2. Extension programming would include curriculum development and workshops focused on stakeholders.

    3. Research results will be presented to stakeholders, in workshops, and professional meetings.

    4. Stakeholders include small-scale and minority farmers, urban farmers, small-scale environmental consultants, urban planners, reclaimed surface mainland property owners, as well as support the fermentation and distillation Sciences industry in Kentucky in relation to the bourbon industry

    5. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including sustainable systems and related areas.

    6. Develop research proposals, conduct research, analyze research results, and publish results in the area of sustainable systems.

    7. Share research-based results with stakeholders through extension programs.

    8. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students engaged in applied research projects.

    9. Serve on committees for universities, stakeholder groups, and professional associations.

    10. Work with small and limited resource farmers and underserved communities.

    11. Other related duties as assigned.

    OTHER DUTIES: The position will conduct other duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Natural Resource, Environmental Systems Engineering, Environmental Sustainability, Horticulture, Agriculture, Biology, or a closely related field required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

    • Candidates should have evidence of engaging stakeholders in their work, and evidence of collaboration across disciplinary boundaries to develop solutions to sustainability challenges in areas such as climate, energy, water, food, built environment, and mobility.

    • Candidates must demonstrate the potential for collaborative, integrated, multi-disciplinary research, granting, publishing, and stakeholder involvement.

    • Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in grant writing, knowledge and skills in statistics, research and teaching, and the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting.

    • Ability to monitor or supervise laboratory and field research.

    • Ability to work under deadlines.

    • Valid Driver’s License.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be able to travel primarily in-state (20%)

    • Occasionally may need to move light equipment and carry supplies, publications, and needed equipment for demonstration and training programs.
