Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to join the Family Medicine research team. The Senior Data Analyst will be the department’s primary support for critical research being conducted through VCU’s Center for Clinical and Translational Research with the Wright Center. The Senior Analyst will work to provide ongoing reporting, data management, transformation, and documentation for various studies and research projects our department is involved in across the university.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Maintain existing databases for several ongoing projects in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health that include data from electronic medical records, personal health records, online surveys, paper surveys, the Virginia All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), and the American Community Survey (ACS) data, amongst other sources.
  • Work collaboratively with informatics staff in a range of primary care practices, health systems, and collaborating organizations to import and securely store data that meets the needs of the department’s research team.
  • Write and maintain documentation of department databases while maintaining all state, federal, and university privacy, and confidentiality protocols.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize based on discretion.
  • Export raw data from APCD that is minimally transformed to organize and standardize the APCD in the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model.
  • Generate accurate and easy-to-read data summaries for further analysis by collaborating department statisticians.
  • Develop, test, modify, and maintain programs that query and summarize available data to be used in a collaborative environment across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:

1) At least one year of experience performing one or more of the following in a full-time capacity:

o Developing and implementing data analyses or data collection systems

o Managing and maintaining databases to include acquiring data from primary or secondary data sources

o Providing data scrubs, analysis, or application support

2) Work towards a Master’s degree in an applicable discipline with hands-on SQL or Python experience will suffice in lieu of the first requirement.
  • The selected candidate must be available to work on-site in Richmond, Virginia. Flexible work schedules will be addressed on a case by case basis with on-site work required for the first six months.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience with healthcare or patient data is highly preferred.
