Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) invites applications for full-time positions at the rank of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Discipline to teach in the Master of Science degree program in Strategic Communication. This position will begin on July 1, 2022. This is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

The School seeks dynamic experts in the field of communication with the ability to interpret and translate academic theory into practice, and demonstrated capability to teach multiple core and elective courses across two or more of the following curriculum themes: 

  • Strategic communication strategy and leadership
  • Market research, audience insight, planning
  • Communication channels mix, media
  • Strategic communication planning, especially as it relates to supporting corporate strategy
  • Digital communication strategy: social media, SEO/SEM, new media trends, digital media and analytics
  • Integrative Capstone course

The successful candidate must have demonstrated capability to teach in multiple modalities and expertise in instructional technology. Student population includes emerging professionals to experienced professionals, studying in full-time, part-time and executive formats.

The successful candidate may be asked to serve in an administrative capacity for the MS program. Responsibilities include leading programmatic and curricular development efforts, professional development opportunities for students, and strategic planning for the program, such as marketing, enrollment, student life, and alumni affairs

The successful candidate should be capable of advancing the program's academic mission.  Additional responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: advising, active participation in curriculum and program development and evaluation; designing and teaching classes in collaboration with other program faculty; participating in faculty recruitment and evaluation; enhancing the program's reputation and expanding its network, and development and execution of strategies to support students as they transition to alumni; serving on SPS- and University-wide governance and other committees.


BA/BS required.

Ideal candidates will hold a doctoral degree or terminal degree in communication or a related field. Candidates should have a background as a practitioner and a scholar, including at least five years of applied experience working as an organizational leader with accountability for delivering strategic communication plans. Successful candidates will exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and engaged scholarship. 

Candidates at the rank of Senior Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, and a superlative record of teaching as a lecturer, and documented evidence of excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities. 

Candidates at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field.
