Job Description
The SI Coaches provides academic support through out-of-class tutoring sessions in close collaboration with the course instructor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend all lectures for the designated course. Take lecture
notes and become familiar with course content to be assessed on
quizzes and exams.
- Actively schedule students (1:1 and in groups) to sign up for
SI sessions throughout the semester to go over assignments and
missing work and to prepare for exams.
- Meet with the instructor regularly to ascertain students'
progress and keep the instructor informed of tutorial
sessions.
- Model critical thinking skills relevant to the content, review
notes, cover and reinforce course expectations, and address
students' questions.
- Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of the interactive
learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing or completing
students' assignments for them).
- Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids
that enhance students' learning or that are directed by the
instructor.
- Model generalizable and effective learning skills and studying
strategies for students to emulate in the present and the
future.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Attend paid weekly SI Coach training meetings prior to and
throughout each semester.
- Create student profiles for the course and identify at-risk
cases in consultation with the instructor.
- Collect attendance and learning outcome data for measurable
improvement of SI sessions.
- Help students to master prerequisite skills and knowledge
needed to be successful in current and future courses.
- Lead SI training as assigned by your SI supervisor.
- Attend relevant professional development workshops offered by
the Academic Center of Excellence.
- Develop and maintain a professional relationship with SI course
instructors.
- Maintain confidential records.
- Prepare reports.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Have a grade of B+ or higher in selected course and/or a
bachelor's degree in the applicable discipline.
- Have and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Be able to work a flexible schedule of 8-10 hours per week and
on weekends (during center hours).
- Have experience working with similar student
population.
- Understands how to deliver support to students who are
struggling.
- Possess good organizational and time management
skills.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Preference will be given to currently enrolled undergraduate
students classified as sophomore and above.
- Experience working with college/university students in an
educational setting.
- Supplemental Instruction experience in content
area.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Computer software - Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Subject content of assigned area
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Teach others how to learn and to relate to diverse learning
needs.
- Interact effectively, professionally, and tactfully with
students, faculty, and other university personnel.
- Motivate students.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Arrange and keep a work schedule.
- Proficient in assigned content area.
- Prepare and facilitate workshops, presentations, and
orientations to groups of students.
- Think critically and problem solve.
Other Requirements:
- Requires working a flexible schedule of up to 19 hours per
week.
- Requires working evening and/or weekend hours.
- Position is contingent upon funding.
- This position is funded through 05/31/2021 with a possibility
of renewal or extension.
