The Position

Peninsula College is recruiting for a full-time, tenure-track Sociology faculty position to begin Fall Quarter 2022. The college is seeking applications from dedicated teacher-scholars to teach and provide

instructional leadership in the Social Sciences. Applicants with community college teaching experience and/or experience teaching introductory courses in diversity, deviance, and gender are especially encouraged to apply. The ability to teach interdisciplinary courses is also desirable. Position begins September 2022.

We are looking for a dynamic teacher-scholar who can communicate effectively with a highly diverse student population. Primary teaching duties will be Introduction to Sociology, Understanding Diversity, Sociology of Gender and Sexuality, and Sociology of Deviance with the opportunity to develop other courses that align with areas of expertise. Courses are offered in face-to-face, online, and hybrid class environments.

Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle. The College is honored to serve six sovereign American Indian nations in the region: Jamestown S’Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Quileute, Makah, Hoh, and Port Gamble S’Klallam.

Essential Functions

  • Teach assigned courses in accordance with course descriptions and learning outcomes outlined in the syllabi.
  • Teach classes in a face-to-face, hybrid, evening, weekend, and/or online format at Peninsula College’s main campus and at the satellite campuses.
  • Gather, organize, and/or create course materials that facilitate learning, with a focus on OER (Open Educational Resources)/zero-cost materials.
  • Provide expert learning opportunities to students in an atmosphere that promotes learning consistent with college policies.
  • Contribute to the quality and growth of the social science division.
  • Assess student learning in Sociology as part of the Annual Academic Plan and college accreditation process.
  • Engage in scholarly activity that complements and informs equitable teaching practices.
  • Work with the Social Sciences Division Chair, Dean, and Vice President of Instruction to develop retention strategies.
  • Advise students on programs and degree planning.
  • Participate in committee work supporting the college.
  • Work with regional nonprofit organizations and community groups to develop successful internships and collaborative learning opportunities.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work independently and in teams while maintaining professionalism and modeling the colleges Guiding Principles.
  • Ability to teach a spectrum of sociology course offerings, including Introduction to Sociology, Understanding
  • Diversity, Sociology of Gender and Sexuality, and Sociology of Deviance with the opportunity to develop other courses that align with areas of expertise.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Exceptional teaching skills, with knowledge and use of diverse teaching methods, including a commitment to the use of computer technology in the learning environment, whether in face to face, online or hybrid classes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and to communicate clearly with native and non-native English speakers.
  • Enthusiasm for the subject matter which engages the students.

Required education or certificates

  • Master’s Degree in Sociology or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in sociology, related social science or interdisciplinary field.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a teacher-scholar with demonstrated effective teaching and scholarship.
  • Advising experience and evidence of effective and innovative teaching at an accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education.
  • Experience in curriculum development, administrative work, or community/student support.
  • Experience in successfully incorporating technology into pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching on-line.
  • Demonstrated focus on student success.
  • Demonstrated experience (e.g., professional, collaborative research, policy/programming, etc.) with nonprofit or community organizations.
  • Experience in collaborative teaching.

Employment Terms

  • A full-time tenure-track position beginning the 2022 Fall quarter; this is a nine-month academic year appointment.
  • The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule in which placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Initial annual salary placement is anticipated to be $55,500-75,500 for a standard 175-day contract, depending on qualifications.
  • A standard 175-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of workdays remaining in the contract year.
  • Excellent benefits package including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; sick leave; retirement plan; optional credit union and tax deferred annuity programs.  Peninsula College contributes $936.00 per month towards the cost of the Washington State employee insurance programs.  The college also supports professional development.
