GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The Chemistry Program currently consists of four (4) full time faculty members and approximately sixty (60) declared undergraduate majors. The program also services large numbers of Biology, Nursing, and Engineering majors. The program has the use of one large teaching laboratory for general and organic chemistry, one smaller lab for analytical/physical chemistry, and one new multidisciplinary lab. The smaller lab houses the atomic absorption and ultraviolet-visible spectrometers, and an atomic force microscope. The program also has an instrumentation lab that holds a 60 megahertz Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, a capillary gas chromatography, a freeze dryer, and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer.

CHARACTER OF DUTIES:

The successful applicant will be required to teach general chemistry and organic chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate should also have experience in teaching chemistry online or by distance mode. The chemistry department supports pre-nursing, pre-engineering and general education science requirements and teaching the relevant introductory courses may be required. Area of expertise of most interest is Organic Chemistry with post-doctoral experience. Successful candidates will be expected to establish an active research program and documented evidence of scholarly activities is required for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum: Research based Ph.D in experimental chemistry, preferably with a specialization in Organic Chemistry with teaching experience from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent. Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Post-doctoral experience in Organic Chemistry research (academic), teaching experience at higher level educational institutions in Organic Chemistry, experience in developing and teaching online/distance learning courses in chemistry, documented evidence of excellence in teaching, experience teaching in the Western Pacific Region and an appreciation of a diverse student population, and recent peer reviewed research publications.

Police and Court Clearance: Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment.  Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence.  Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.

Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.

Federal law requires presentation of eligibility to work in the United States within seventy-two (72) hours of reporting for employment. Specifically, 8 USC 1324A requires the employer to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the United States of all newly hired employees.
