Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Systems and Networks (or immediate supervisor), the Network Support Specialist responds to and diagnoses network-based functions of the campus network. This position requires intermediate level expertise in supporting and troubleshooting Ethernet over copper and optical fiber cabling. It requires a solid working foundation in networking and systems concepts and implementations. Excellent troubleshooting skills required. This position is intended to provide Level 2- intermediate support between the Help desk and Systems and Networks. As an important member of the Systems and Network team, the Network Support specialist will provide troubleshooting and support of wired and wireless campus network connectivity, network access control, and other functions in support of the campus network. Knowledge and use of network monitoring systems and network troubleshooting tools is required. Strong foundation in OSI layers 1-3 and other networking standards is essential. The Network Support Specialist is also instrumental the in planning, configuring, and administering wired and wireless network systems as determined by the Associate Director of Systems and Networks (or immediate supervisor). Additionally, the Network Support Specialist performs primary and backup roles as assigned and is expected to maintain a high degree of technical knowledge and ability to learn new concepts quickly.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:
  • Assists with configuration and administration of the wireless and wired network as appropriate;
  • Assists in the support, management, and troubleshooting of building-based networks;
  • Provides field support and initial point of escalation for campus network connectivity and network user support beyond Help Desk;
  • Performs and/or coordinates repairs of damaged or dysfunctional network hardware;
  • Assists in the monitoring and timely response to resolve network health events;
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of networking skills and best practices, as applicable to current duties;
  • Maintains current knowledge of networking principles, standards, and the use of networking technologies.
  • Performs daily analysis of network health utilizing monitoring systems and network troubleshooting tools;
  • Assists with indoor/outdoor network communication cabling adds, moves, and changes as required;
  • Assist networking team with documenting network services and configurations;
  • Works proactively with peers to improve network services and provide more efficient network and systems services;
  • Works extensively as a team member with other ITS staff on current and future projects as required;
  • Manages and prioritizes multiple tasks with accurate and timely follow-through;
  • Provides additional backup support for the campus VoIP/SIP system ;
  • Work with third party vendors to provide support for residence hall networking and IPTV;
  • Serves as a member of the Systems and Networks “on-call” team;
  • Completes performance review with supervisor to align expectations with the Furman strategic plan;
  • Other duties as assigned.
    Relationships:
    Daily contact with members of own work unit and immediate supervisor to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices, or functions.
    Frequent contact with members of other departments and students to provide and support services and share information.
    Frequent communication with vendor/contractor teams to facilitate project direction and understanding.
    Responsibility for Final Decisions:
    Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.
    Errors are readily detected in the normal course of work by standard check or crosscheck.
    Reports To: Associate Director of Systems and Networks.
    Routine work is frequently performed independently, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.
    Emergency work may call for quick independent decisions requiring close communications with immediate supervisor.
    Education/Skill Requirements:
  • Associate degree or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years related experience.
  • Tier II problem resolution in support of wired and wireless networks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional attitude.
  • Strong LAN/WLAN troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong real-world understanding of networking principals and standards: OSI model, Ethernet/Fiber, LAN/WLAN networking, and TCP/IP.
  • Self-motivated, team player.
  • Experience installing and supporting indoor/outdoor low voltage (Ethernet and Fiber) cabling.
  • Experience supporting Network Access Control and VoIP/SIP a plus.
  • Experience with network management a plus.
  • Experience with network switch and router protocols and configurations.
  • Experience with Network Monitoring Systems and Dashboards.
    Work Conditions:
    Exposure to varied weather conditions.
    May involve some crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and handling.
    Most work is performed under usual office conditions.
