Xavier University, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is currently accepting applications for an Adjunct Instructor of Physics to begin in the fall of 2022. This position will include the instruction of one Astronomy lecture course (2 hrs) and two Astronomy lab courses (4 hrs) housed within the Department of Physics.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum qualifications to teach Physics at Xavier University include a Masters in Physics or Engineering or related field with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Physics (typically a minor in Physics). Candidates should have experience in teaching physics at high school or undergraduate level.

This position will include one Astronomy lecture course (2 contact hrs) and two Astronomy lab courses (4 contact hrs) with a maximum of 36 students in the lecture and a maximum of 18 students in each lab to begin in the fall 2022. The courses cover the following topics: astronomical phenomena related to the earth, the solar system, stars, and galaxies. The goal is to allow students to gain a conceptual understanding of astronomy in a manner that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes the use of mathematics. Xavier has an observatory that can be used for the course. Students in these courses are typically from all University majors. The times of day these courses are taught is flexible and can to some extent be adjusted to the preferences of the instructor. Contracts for adjunct faculty members are issued on a semester basis. Additional courses in the spring semester 2023 and beyond may be available to the applicant who demonstrates successful teaching in her or his first semester at Xavier.

Duties include:
  • Present and explain course topics in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Use Xavier’s campus-wide CMS, Canvas, to provide course information and maintain an electronic record of student progress.
  • Grade assignments and lab reports weekly.
  • Check e-mail daily.
  • Deliver learner-centered instruction by establishing an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Work cooperatively with members of the Physics department.
