SOC104 is designed to familiarize students with issues and theories related to cultural differences and encourage them to develop intercultural knowledge and skills for effectively working with people from diverse backgrounds in a variety of contexts. Candidates with expertise in race, class, and gender are particularly encouraged to apply. The Social Sciences program offers a Sociology major that is applied in nature, and takes an active and hands-on approach to promoting students' professional skill development, including advocating for change and social justice.

Lasell University is committed to creating a campus community that recognizes diversity and intercultural competence as integral components of excellence. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths in this area. Employees who represent the various areas of diversity of our student body are key contributors to our strategic vision.

Lasell's Core Curriculum focuses on combining career readiness and professional skill development, through a variety of cohort experiences, with a strong grounding in the liberal arts and a commitment to diversity, social justice, and inclusion. The Equity & Intersectionality Experience Faculty Coordinator will have the following responsibilities, and receive 2 course releases a year (typical teaching load is 12 credits, or 4 courses, a semester):
  • Teach at least 1 section of SOC104 at least once a year; preferably every semester. Remainder of teaching load to be determined based on individual's area of expertise within Sociology or related field.
  • Coordinate team of faculty, both full and part-time, who teach multiple sections of this course every semester. Hold weekly meetings/office hours to ensure that the Equity and Intersectionality Experience is a common cohort one for the students. Provide training for new faculty instructors in the methods and techniques determined to be best practices for teaching SOC104.
  • Develop curriculum and training materials for delivery of the SOC104 Equity & Intersectionality Course. Identify and/or create up-to-date teaching tools that support the application of DEI initiatives across all majors offered on campus.
  • Identify current faculty and hire new part-time faculty to teach SOC104 sections as needed.
  • Exemplify and cultivate effective intercultural engagement among colleagues and students and foster an inclusive atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Donahue Institute for Equity & Social Justice, and leadership within the Core Curriculum Steering committee to organize and coordinate co-curricular activities, assessment of the Core Curriculum, and development of learning objectives related to Intercultural Knowledge & Effectiveness as they progress from first year to senior year
  • Serve as a faculty member in the Social Sciences Program reporting to the Dean of the School of Humanities, Education, Justice & Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Program Chair. Contribute to assessment, curriculum, and development of initiatives for the well-being of the Social Sciences Program, which houses Sociology and Psychology majors.
  • Institutional/Administrative involvement is already included in this position but opportunities for participating on faculty governance or institutional committees related to DEI work are available if this is of interest

Successful applicants will demonstrate passion for a student-centered teaching environment and innovative, project-focused initiatives utilizing an active, experiential approach. Productivity and currency in an academic discipline as well as commitment to the college community involvement are priorities.

Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Sociology, Social Justice Education, or a related discipline required; ABD will be considered.
  • Experience with teaching or delivering trainings in diversity, equity, and inclusion; preference for candidates with experience teaching undergraduate student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continual development of effective intercultural interactions and skills.
  • Willingness to incorporate the University's Connected Learning Philosophy into their courses, including SOC104, and to bring global and non-Western perspectives into the teaching of equity and intersectionality.
