South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) seeks a strategic, forward-thinking, and dynamic visionary leader to serve as its Executive Diversity Officer.

The Executive Diversity Officer will collaboratively work with the college and greater community to expand its work in addressing systemic racism, discrimination, social and economic injustice. This critical work will be done within the context of shared governance and union-negotiated contracts.  Equity is an essential part of the college's mission and SPSCC has been engaged in substantial equity, diversity and inclusion work over the years. Reporting directly to the President, and serving on the college's Executive Team, the Executive Diversity Officer position will lead the college in efforts to create an environment that values and demonstrates its commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

    What You'll Do

    The Executive Diversity Officer will advise the President, Executive Team, and college community as a whole, on matters related to equity, diversity, and inclusion and its impact on the college community.  The position is responsible for working with other units of the college to develop, align, and/or integrate a range of new and existing strategies, initiatives, policies and procedures that will foster a more inclusive, welcoming, supportive, and diverse college community.  Understanding that this critical work is the responsibility of everyone at the college, this position will guide the college community in expanding and extending the values of diversity, equity and inclusion through broad engagement of students, faculty, and staff.
     
    The Executive Diversity Officer will lead the college, in collaboration with other administrators, faculty, staff and students, in examination of current practices, policies, procedures, programs, structures, and campus climate, to develop a comprehensive, college-wide plan to create and sustain a vibrant learning and working environment that is welcoming and supportive of all, as well as a plan that strives to eradicate equity gaps in student participation and achievement.


    Responsibilities of the Executive Diversity Officer include, but are not limited to:

    • Provide leadership, coordination, consultation, assistance, strategic oversight, and direction, regarding all equity, diversity, and inclusion matters.
    • Responsible for the development, growth, and monitoring of programs including IGNITE and Black Scholars.
    • Develop and provide leadership for the implementation of an equity, diversity, and inclusion plan that affirms the college's commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, while aiming to create an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and supportive of all students, faculty and staff.
    • Recommend policy, procedure and structural improvements that remove barriers to student and employee success.
    • In conjunction with the Vice President for Instruction and faculty, help to develop and implement inclusive curricula and pedagogical practice.
    • Provide analysis of legislation related to equity, diversity, inclusion, non-discrimination, and develop and recommend policies that ensure compliance with all legal requirements.
    • Collaborate with Human Resources to develop strategies and opportunities to recruit and retain a diverse workforce that is reflective of the diversity of the student population.
    • Develop metrics and dashboards to ensure accountability, tracking, and monitoring of equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. Work closely with relevant College offices in use of data tools (i.e. campus climate survey, demographic data, student completion and employment data, etc.) to compile reports that create benchmarks and assess institutional progress regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts.
    • Develop dynamic and intentional equity, diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives for faculty and staff that adequately address the educational and social needs of our campus and greater Thurston County community.

     

     

    Qualifications You Possess

    Required Qualifications:

    • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
    • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience in the development, implementation and assessment of equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
    • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
    • Experience and/or leadership in serving, advocating for, collaborating with, and/or representing specific underrepresented marginalized communities.
    • Servant Leadership Development -- The ability to share power, put the needs of students or employees first and help people develop and perform as highly as possible



    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in a higher education setting.
    • Experience in student and staff recruitment, retention, training, and employment strategies to foster workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Demonstrated understanding of culture in higher education, including shared governance and respect for diverse views and opinions.
    • Demonstrated experience with developing and supporting continuous improvement principles utilizing a systemic approach and data for decision-making.
    • Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
    • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively across multiple internal and external offices.
    • Experience in effectively facilitating challenging conversations that produce positive outcomes.



    Desired Skills and Abilities:

    • Evidence of leading organizational change, particularly as it relates to diversity, equity and inclusion.
    • Strong theoretical and working knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion, and the ability to translate that knowledge to others, as well as possess the ability to put their experience and knowledge into practice.
    • Ability to lead others through change toward the desired outcomes.
    • Significant knowledge and experience in addressing matters such as, but not limited to:
      1. Recruiting and retaining employees and students of color; (b) creating welcoming and inclusive environments for all people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, English language learners, immigrants, and people with varying abilities; and (c) addressing inequities and conflicts related to race, power, white privilege, institutional racism, and implicit bias.
    • Experience developing, implementing, and successfully facilitating productive discussions and trainings regarding issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
    • Ability to be highly collaborative, and possess a keen ability to effectively communicate, and connect with diverse individuals both inside and outside of the college community.
