Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a tenure-track assistant professor for a joint appointment in Anthropology and International Studies. The tenure home and half of the teaching responsibilities of the appointee (including graduate-level teaching and advising) will be in the Department of Anthropology. The remaining half of the appointee's teaching responsibilities will be in the International Studies Major. We will accept applications until the position is filled, but to assure consideration applications should be submitted no later than December 1, 2021. We seek a cultural anthropologist with research and teaching strengths in social justice issues in Southeast Asia who will be able to contribute to the International Studies Major's research and teaching on global culture and social justice, broadly construed. The successful candidate will maintain an active field-based research program in Southeast Asia; will teach in anthropology and international studies; and will communicate scholarship effectively to broader audiences inside and outside the academy.

This hire is one of three across the College of Letters & Science to be made through a Luce-Foundation supported initiative intended to develop a strong social justice emphasis in Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Faculty and students at UW-Madison have a long history of research on social justice concerns in Southeast Asia and around the world. The Luce-funded initiative will build on these existing strengths and add greater diversity to the voices engaged in these discussions. It is intended to catalyze cutting-edge academic inquiry, strengthen scholarly infrastructure, and promote new networks and collaborations among academics and practitioners. Candidates for this position should have an interest in developing scholarly and community collaborations with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, as well as with colleagues in related centers, programs, and departments across campus.

Duties of this position:

- Maintain an active field-based research program in Southeast Asia;

- Pursue intra- and extramural funding to support their research;

- Develop a national and international research profile by publishing their research in reputable peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and books;

- Teach undergraduate courses in international studies and both undergraduate and graduate courses in cultural anthropology; the typical combined teaching load is 2-2, divided equally between International Studies and Anthropology;

- Advise undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students;

- Proactively support the expansion of diversity among all components of the department and program, and ensure an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement;

- Actively participate in faculty governance and other service to the department, program, university, and profession.

The appointee is expected to be a full member of both the Department of Anthropology and the International Studies Major community.
