Job Summary:

The Frank J. Remington Center, a University of Wisconsin Law School clinical program, has an opening for a Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Associate Professor in the Wisconsin Innocence Project (WIP). In WIP, law students, under clinical faculty supervision, provide legal assistance to prison inmates in Wisconsin and other states in cases in which the inmates have viable claims that they are actually innocent and wrongly convicted.

In this position, the clinical professor will work with law students to proactively identify cases suitable for postconviction DNA testing or determine whether other avenues are available to establish a claim of innocence, as well as litigate viable claims of innocence on behalf of inmates. The person in this position will also take over ongoing appellate and postconviction litigation on behalf of the project.

Admission to practice law in Wisconsin is required.

Responsibilities:

The specific duties of the position are as follows:

Work full-time in the Remington Center's Wisconsin Innocence Project as a Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor. Additionally, the position will also involve overseeing any administrative running of the clinic, under the overall umbrella of the Frank J. Remington Center. Primary responsibilities will be to instruct and supervise law students who investigate and evaluate the cases of inmates who claim they are innocent of the crime for which they have been convicted, determine whether cases are suitable for DNA or other forensic testing, determine whether other avenues are available to establish a claim of innocence, and litigate viable claims of innocence on behalf of inmates. The professor will:

-Guide/advise law students in the handling of their cases.
-Take over appellate/postconviction work in ongoing WIP cases.
-Hold at least weekly individual conferences with law clinic students.
-Be available to students for consultation and advice during the work day.
-Provide periodic oral and written evaluation of students.
-Review, edit, and approve all letters, pleadings, and documents prepared by students.
-Visit penal institution(s) on a bi-weekly basis or as necessary to supervise student interviews of inmates; conduct screening interviews as needed.
-Conduct other factual investigations, as needed, to assess and develop inmates' cases.
-Make court appearances as needed for cases generated by work for inmates.
-Provide classroom instruction in conjunction with clinical projects for law students.
-Assist with curriculum development, policy reform efforts, and scholarly research and writing on issues arising out of the work of the clinics, consistent with the expectations of the Law School's Clinical Promotions & Hiring Standards.
-Attend regular staff meetings.
-Comply with grant and other reporting requirements.
-Complete other tasks/duties as assigned by the Frank J. Remington Center Director.
-Serve on Law School committees and contribute to the Law School community.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
JD or LLB required

Qualifications:

Minimum three years prior experience in criminal legal practice required, at least five years of criminal legal practice experience strongly preferred. Prior experience with postconviction remedies or claims of wrongful conviction is preferred, as is prior clinical or other law teaching experience. Additional consideration given to those individuals with a demonstrated interest in policy advocacy, legal research and publication, or other methods of service to the legal community.
Previous law teaching experience required to be hired at the Associate level.

License/Certification:

Required
State Bar of Wisconsin membership
Admitted to the Wisconsin Bar by September 1, 2022.
