Summary of Responsibilities: The Associate Director will work all members of the development team to accomplish fundraising and stewardship goals for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Associate Director is responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of annual donors in support of research, patient care and educational objectives. The Associate Director will oversee stewardship tracking for major donors to the department.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of and ability to articulate the research, teaching and clinical mission and funding priorities of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

  • Qualify, cultivate, solicit or steward gifts of $500 to $25,000 from existing and newly identified grateful patients, unaffiliated individuals, alumni, and family foundations to the department and select specialty areas. Maintain a portfolio of 125 annual giving donors. Implement relationship-based strategies to increase the number and size of donations, and when major gifts develop, continue as primary relationship manager with these donors.
  • Independently develop, implement and track annual appeal programs for resident and fellow alumni, grateful patients in a variety of specialty disease areas, memorial donors, and third-party fundraiser. Effectively use virtual communication platforms including MailChimp, ThankView and Aspire, in addition to more conventional methods of communication.
  • Manage stewardship for own portfolio and for department’s dormant portfolio. Assist with stewardship program for major donors, including tracking of required stewardship reporting schedules. Assist with writing and assembling major stewardship reports as requested.
  • Create, manage and measure effectiveness of thank you programs for annual donors. Refresh and maintain department and divisional acknowledgment communications. Assist with content development and updates for breaking news, case statements and impact reports.
  • Independently manage volunteers and faculty members of the Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence. Advisory Board, in coordination with counterparts in the Department of Neurology when appropriate, to include board meetings, events and fundraising appeals.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Medical Annual Giving for department’s annual email and direct mail appeals including list management and collateral updates. Serve as primary liaison with Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine communications staff to maintain departmental digital and print media presence broadly. Represent the department on the Donor Relations Liaison Group, Prospect Pipeline and other institutional groups.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute development events, donor lectures, professorship dedications, and departmental advisory board meetings and in support of the team.
  • Skills:

    The Associate Director must demonstrate the ability to work with patients, volunteers and donors using best-practice fundraising, communications and program management skills. The Associate Director must be a self-starter, be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis to succeed in a fast-paced environment. The Associate Director must be a cooperative, collegial individual who enjoys working with diverse populations.

    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • At least three years of experience working in a fundraising, donor relations or marketing environment.
    • Previous work managing volunteers preferred.
    • Proven oral communications, writing and proofing skills.
    • Proficiency with email marketing tools, word processing and data management programs, web-based software and Adobe products.
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • The ability to use discretion handling confidential information.
    • Performs well under pressure and within time constraints with accuracy and diplomacy.
