The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an innovative and experienced academic administrator to join a team of deans, faculty, staff, and students charged with implementing, assessing, and iteratively improving a newly developed holistic core education program for the Dietrich College.

The Associate Dean for Student Success will report directly to the Dean of the College and work collaboratively as a member of the Dean’s leadership team. The Associate Dean for Student Success leads the college’s efforts on holistic student advising, academic support, and experiential learning, as well as serving as the college’s principal liaison to the university’s efforts in student success and student affairs. The Associate Dean for Student Success is also responsible for supervising the Director of the College’s Academic Advising Center (AAC), and the Director of Experiential Learning. In addition, the Associate Dean for Student Success coordinates student success efforts associated with the Dietrich College General Education Curriculum, and partners with student success efforts housed in Dietrich academic departments. The Associate Dean for Student Success works closely with the College’s two other academic associate deans (forming the College’s “Office of Undergraduate Studies”), associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion, assistant dean for educational experience assessment, department heads, and undergraduate program directors. The Associate Dean for Student Success also collaborates with associate deans across the campus on university-wide initiatives.

 

 

Responsibilities for this position, and the necessary qualities and skills of its incumbent, include the following:

 

Lead and Supervise College-Level Student Success Efforts

  • Formulate the advising and student success strategies and goals for the college. 
  • Direct the long-term planning for advising and student success through implementation, assessment, and administration of college's strategic plan for advising and student success. 
  • Serve on the Dean’s Cabinet to represent the student success team and help coordinate efforts across the college (academic affairs, advancement, communication and marketing, computer operations, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate Studies Team and the GenEd Steering Committee to ensure alignment of student success efforts with the General Education program and all other undergraduate opportunities.
  • Integrate undergraduate initiatives with equity-focused practices and evidence-based, data-informed approaches. as a part of the College’s broader DEI and Assessment efforts.
  • Oversee the academic operations of the college’s AAC and Experiential Learning team 
  • Supervise college programs for additional student support (first gen support, Tartan Scholars, etc.).
  • Orchestrate the professional development of all Dietrich College undergraduate academic advisors.
  • Supervise the Director of the AAC and the College’s Director of Experiential Learning.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and recommend salary increments to the Dean for the AAC Director and Director of Experiential Learning.
  • Provide input for performance appraisals and salary recommendations for AAC advising and administrative staff, and any staff associated with the College’s Office of Experiential Learning.
  • May act as a primary academic advisor for a small (25 or fewer) group of students with specialized advising needs.
  • Serve as a resource for college academic advisors, academic program managers, and faculty regarding complex student cases.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact in the College for parents of Dietrich undergraduate students navigating complex problems.
  • Develop and coordinate retention efforts in the College.

 

Represent the College in University Initiatives

  • Build the equity and visibility of the student success programs both internally within the University and externally.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other offices, organizations, and institutions (within and outside the University) to increase student recruitment and retention efforts, job placements, project offerings, and visibility.
  • Serve as the primary college contact for the University Student Affairs liaison to Dietrich College.
  • Represent the College on University-wide academic and advising committees and councils with an emphasis on improving policies and practices to support student success.
  • Collaborate with ongoing, university wide student success and experiential learning initiatives.
  • Engage with donors and prospective parents and families at the request of the advancement and admissions teams.

Qualifications 

  • Master's degree required, Doctorate preferred.
  • 8 years of relevant experience required; specific prior experience in leadership of student success initiatives focused on academic advising and/or experiential learning is desired.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and reasoning skills.  
  • Excellent communication, organization, collaboration, and planning skills.
  • Commitment to equity-focused practices and evidence-based, data-informed approaches. 
  • Experience supporting first-generation and historically resilient groups on campus.
