Research Administration Services (RAS) supports the research and scholarly activities of FAS and SEAS (the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences) faculty, through close collaboration and oversight of/with the research faculty, staff and students by providing administrative support for the lifecycle of sponsored research. This support includes, but is not limited to, pre and post-award guidance, review, audit, and oversight of both financial and non-financial aspects of sponsored projects.

Position Summary
The Sr. Financial Compliance and Reporting Specialist for Research Administration Services is responsible for overseeing the effort reporting process for Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and ensuring the process(es) adhere to standard regulations and university guidelines. The ideal incumbent is analytical, curious, and able to navigate a complex university and a quickly changing sponsored landscape. S/he will provide guidance/oversight/direction to grants administrators, faculty, and the research community at large by primarily serving as the main point of contact for financial matters related to effort/salary on sponsored projects. S/he will work collaboratively with a dynamic team and department, have the skills to work independently and among a diverse population, and the flexibility to pivot as business needs change.


Brief description of responsibilities:

  • Oversight, review, and/or management of:
    • salary certification and effort reporting including
      • proposed faculty effort/salary
      • faculty supplemental salary
      • faculty salary incentive program
      • administrative and student salary on sponsored projects
    • e-verify compliance
    • cost transfers

  • Provide guidance, support, and/or training in the following areas:
    • sponsored project effort
    • salary on sponsored projects
    • financial compliance
    • stipend recipient direction/compliance
    • university-related processes/procedures
    • sponsor requirements/policies
    • federal guidelines
    • system/process implementation

  • Provide support/guidance for:
    • internal financial audits
    • external financial audits

  • Assist with indirect cost (IDC) rate analysis and calculation


Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or 7 years of work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in one or more of the following areas: finance, sponsored projects, budget management, research administration, financial compliance, financial analysis
  • Advanced knowledge of federal research regulations
  • Working comfort with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Teams
  • Comfort working in a hybrid environment
  • Ability to pivot in an actively changing environment
