Agroforestry Project Manager



Job Description

The Project Manager will provide technical assistance and project coordination for livestock producers who are selected to receive funding for open-field silvopasture establishment as part of an Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF) grant to Virginia Tech. The Project Manager will be administratively housed within the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation. Technical assistance and project coordination will be provided in conjunction with two non-profit partners (Appalachian Sustainable Development and Rural Action) who serve as organizational representatives in defined areas of operation. Tasks include engagement and dialogue with selected producers to determine needs, provide field-based and remote site assessments, offer system design consultation and guidance for post-planting site protection and product use, help initiate planting stock procurement and site establishment, work with producers to troubleshoot before, during and after establishment, and confirm and document successful project completion. Technical assistance will require remote analysis using applications such as the Web Soil Survey and Geospatial Information Systems, as well as onsite assessment using land survey technologies such as GPS and environmental sampling. The Project Manager will assist with visual media such as photography and videography to showcase project accomplishments, as well as write progress reports and provide public presentations and author publications. Additional assistance with planting stock procurement for forest farm establishment may be needed on a limited basis.

Five to seven days of travel per month is anticipated and the Project Manager is expected to reside within commuting distance of Virginia Tech’s main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia to attend in person meetings as needed. The appointment expires December 31, 2023.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or Silviculture with professional related experience in lieu of an advanced degree
- Advanced studies in natural resources management
- Experience in field agroforestry planning and design, open field tree planting and management, large-order tree nursery stock procurement, and agroforestry producer engagement and technical assistance
- Experience in visual media and biodiversity assessments associated with agroforestry systems
- Project management experience and ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to work within a team as well as independently
- Proven ability to work with diverse audiences in various agroforestry settings and socioeconomic contexts
