The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Bates College, a private, highly selective liberal arts college in Maine, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) to begin August 1, 2022. Applications are welcome from all chemistry disciplines, and candidates who have demonstrated success working with underrepresented or marginalized student populations are particularly encouraged to apply. The position would contribute to the introductory chemistry series, teaching one section each semester along with associated lab sections.

Other opportunities available include supervising senior thesis students and professional development programing offered by the college. Ph.D., is preferred. A.B.D. candidates will be considered.

Applications should include:

  1. a cover letter describing the applicant’s interest in teaching at a small four-year liberal arts college;
  2. a curriculum vitae; 
  3. a teaching statement listing courses the applicant is enthusiastic to teach, and their preparation for teaching them, and a statement about their use of inclusive pedagogy;
  4. two or three letters of recommendation, at least one of which discusses the applicant's teaching experience and preparation.

Applications will be reviewed starting Monday, April 25, 2022, and continuing until the positions are filled. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
