Position Purpose

To serve as a member of a multidisciplinary research lab with a global reach assisting with the development, implementation, deployment, and maintenance, of computer and web-based programs for the collection and analysis of data for various medical research projects. Under the direction of the primary investigator, uses creativity and innovation to meet the programming, data maintenance, and data analysis needs of the lab. Programmer should have the ability to work independently to learn new software and programming skills that may be needed. The candidate will be able to apply their background to a variety of projects in the lab and work with diverse research teams in both in the US and internationally.

The Space Medicine Innovations Lab’s current areas of research are:

· Assessing brain function using the brain’s auditory system in people with various conditions ( HIV, Zika, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s) – Involves work with neurocognitive assessments, central auditory tests, frequency following response, MRI
· Developing new audiological tests for use both in the US and the developing world – Involves work with new audiological testing technologies
· Testing and developing self-directed, autonomous, interactive-media-based behavioral health tools and virtual reality for use in isolated and confined environments (e.g. Antarctic stations) and other settings – Involves work with VR technology and web-based behavioral health tools
· Use of hyperbaric oxygen for research and clinical applications – Involves work with hyperbaric chambers and a research registry
· Other technology/science projects for NASA /Department of Defense – Previous areas of interest have included motion sickness, space-related bone loss, visual changes in astronauts, and noise-induced hearing loss

Experience
  • Two years of experience in computer programming and data management, preferably within a medical environment
  • Experience with database management.
  • Experience with REDCap JavaScript, HTML, CSS, jQuery, Python, PHP, Docker, or the equivalent
  • Experience using MATLAB and MySQL.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Experience in applications / software programming and large database management systems.
  • Ability to write programs and adapt code to create, maintain and manipulate complicated databases.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assess lab needs and design and develop needed software or programming solutions.
  • Organizational skills and ability to plan, implement and evaluate project goals and objectives.
  • Customer service skills

Key Accountabilities

Description

Program maintenance & Development:
  • Assist with REDCap projects and APIs for lab projects including: international mHealth applications with automated cell phone messaging system, integration of REDCap and TabSINT (an open-source audiological testing program), data ETL including automated data exports to lab server, and assist lab members with setting up new REDCap projects.
  • Maintain and modify secure web-based and mobile applications for psychological training and treatment programs including keeping up to date on current security standards and modifying applications to maintain compliance, add application modules, debug existing modules, update authentication, perform database searches, and refresh consent materials in accordance with IRB requirements. Work with programs involves PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SASS, Docker, git, shell scripts, and a variety of other tools.
  • Update and maintain data template for international REDCap-based data registry that collects consistent data on hyperbaric oxygen treatment outcomes and complications. Work with new national and international sites to implement project locally and train on data entry, REDCap updates, and data transfer. Assist with regulatory and data agreements to add new sites into project. Update registry with new measures, data quality checking, and data analysis. Summarize and deliver results to research team.

Statistical analysis:
  • Using a variety of software tools ( MATLAB, Python, R) assist with database queries and statistical analysis for ongoing projects. May participate in the preparation of written grant proposals, research reports, and scientific presentations and published articles.

  • Update and upgrade virtual reality equipment and associated laptop computers, including those deployed at international sites.

Infrastructure Support (25%):
  • Provide data management and infrastructure resources support, such as cleaning, checking, and preparing data for research use, and assisting with data exports, data security, and quality protocols for data entry, storage, and analysis. Shell scripts (bash). Maintain lab hearing databases in SQL including data cleaning and updates as well as administering databases on lab servers.
  • Assists with maintaining testing equipment in the lab.

User support:
  • Troubleshoot problems from users in local, national, and international locations (in all time zones). Serve as the point of contact for support of programs by phone or email. Ensure software issues do not inhibit research collaboration or data collection by providing a timely response, which includes problem recognition, research, isolation, and follow-up steps. Assist with user training on software applications. May also assist with designing standardized training approaches for new users.
