The department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Director of 5th Quarter Program for WVU Football.
About the Opportunity
This position is responsible for organizing and executing the operations of the 5th Quarter program for WVU Football to position student-athletes for success in life beyond graduation.

- Promote diversity and inclusion in the organization and planning of 5th Quarter programming.
- Execute educational programming for the Character Development pillar of the 5th Quarter program to help WVU Football student-athletes discover and develop their personal beliefs, habits, morals, and ideals. Organize topics on academic integrity, core value training, drugs and alcohol, healthy relationships, and mental health and well being, among other things.
- Execute educational programming for the Leadership Development pillar of the 5th Quarter program to help WVU Football student-athletes discover their leadership style and develop a personal leadership philosophy. Organize topics on accountability teams, individual development plan, speaker series, team culture building, training retreat, among other things.
- Execute educational programming for the Real Life pillar of the 5th Quarter program to ensure WVU Football student-athletes are educated on issues and topics they will encounter in everyday life. Organize topics on agent education, financial literacy, nutrition, personal branding, time management, among other things.
- Execute educational programming for the Social Responsibility pillar of the 5th Quarter program to help WVU Football student-athletes positively impact society through civic engagement, social awareness, and community service. Organize topics on campus involvement, community engagement, cultural education, current events, youth programs, among other things.
- Execute educational programming for the Career Development pillar of the 5th Quarter program to expose WVU Football student-athletes to career paths, major exploration, and practical career experience. Organize topics on alumni engagement, internships, interview preparation, networking, resume building, among other things.
- Oversee elite program for select student-athletes looking to gain enhanced off-the-field education and development, including the hiring and management of personnel.
- Support the Freshman Bridge program to prepare incoming freshmen to navigate through the college experience. Topics include but are not limited to college transition, academic preparation, campus resources, and social development.
- Organize the Senior Transition Bridge program to prepare outgoing seniors to navigate life. Topics include but are not limited to mentorships, career preparation, identity development, and personal finance.
- Support the Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations in securing speakers for fall camp and other times throughout the year.
- Utilize the West Virginia Football Network (Athlete Network) to organize 5th Quarter communication and programming for current student-athletes.
- Establish speaker series with former WVU Football student-athletes, community members, and prospective speakers on leadership, life, and other engaging topics.
- Construct mentorship program by establishing relationships with former WVU Football student-athletes and community members.
- Organize a microinternship program for WVU Football student-athletes to gain meaningful work experience.
- Coordinate and organize player employment in conjunction with academics liaison and the Assistant Director of Player Relations / Transition Coordinator.
- Assist the recruiting staff during official and unofficial visits by promoting the 5th Quarter program to prospective student-athletes and their guests.
- Assist with coordination of select external or team related events.
- Collaborate with Assistant Director of Player Relations / Transition Coordinator on various player related programming.
- Liaison to sport psychologist, SAAC, student-athlete development, and other student-centered areas/programs.
- Support staff with financial aid/stipend checks and player housing.
- Regular presence at study hall, mandatory meals, and other student-athlete events and activities promoting opportunities offered through the 5th Quarter program to student-athletes.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletics Director / Chief of Staff - Football.
- Report directly to the Senior Associate Athletics Director / Chief of Staff - Football.
- Maintain communication with athletic compliance office regarding legislation and interpretation of rules and regulations related to applicable legislation governing life skill programming and related activities.
- Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional organizations.
- Participate in campus committees and state and regional professional organizations. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional organizations.
- Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
- Participate in the shared responsibility in maintaining the academic integrity essential for the University to accomplish its mission; adhere to the University’s policies and guidelines regarding academic integrity and dishonesty.
- Exhibit a level of expertise in their professional fields; must also treat the academic requirements necessary for progress toward a degree as a matter of the highest priority for the student-athletes in their charge and must actively encourage them to succeed academically and graduate.
- Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial, ethnical and sexual orientation differences.
- Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.
- Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members and constituencies; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position; responsibilities of the position are ever-changing and require constant education; requires the ability to adapt to any situation and make decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of four (4) years experience, with at least one (1) year experience of college athlete administration or higher education.
- Collegiate athletics experience as a student-athlete or administrator, preferably within an NCAA FBS (football) program.
- Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
- Maintain high standard of ethics and integrity related to intercollegiate athletics
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules
- Maintain knowledge of state and University policies and procedures
- Exhibit strong creative, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to function professionally under high stress and confrontational circumstances
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks for extended period of time
- Demonstrated ability to independently plan and organize work; Proactive attitude towards work and assignments
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop personal contacts with outside groups, i.e. student-athletes, professional representatives, fans, media, donors, University community
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Demonstrated knowledge of record keeping and adherence to schedule; Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends
- Ability to stay abreast of information impacting the affected area
- Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate groups and individuals
- Demonstrated knowledge of effected areas of involvement
- Ability to make administrative / procedural decisions and judgments
- Demonstrated ability to drive and travel via motor vehicle; Maintain a valid driver’s license
- Valid driver's license.
