The University of Washington School of Social Work invites applications for two Full-Time Assistant Teaching Professors (non-tenure track, 9-month service period, multi-year contract) to work in the Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP), effective September 16, 2022. Our social justice mission leads us to invest in recruiting colleagues who in their practice and service demonstrate experience with, knowledge of, and responsiveness to the needs of culturally diverse and oppressed populations.

Responsibilities:

Assistant Teaching Professors in the Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP) support the educational operations of CWTAP. The role provides direct supervision and instruction for a unit of CWTAP participants in their Foundation and Advanced field placement at the designated office of the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). Faculty provided graduate level social work education and practice experience for public child welfare employees and prospective employees through collaboration with the UWS Social Work Program and DCYF. These faculty assure the development of professional social work skills in students committed to post MSW service in public child welfare. CWTAP faculty participate in the School's shared governance and provide leadership for collaborative curriculum and program development and other initiatives. 

Specific duties include:

  • Demonstrate awareness, respect and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body, representing many marginalized identities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Effectively relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, faculty, community groups, and alumni, appreciating each group's interests and concerns.
  • Engage in personal reflection, implementation, and integration of anti-racist, anti-oppressive social work practice and education throughout work with students, agencies, and field instructors.
  • Provide high quality teaching to students, including seminar leadership
  • Translate curriculum into course development and design, using multiple teaching modalities
  • Articulate the current issues, innovations, and best practices in anti-racist and anti-oppressive field education.
  • Provide advising, mentorship, educational needs assessment, and integration of student learning in the field and classroom for students
  • Assess and identify student educational needs and career goals with appropriate field placements to meet those needs.
  • Participate in the development, design, coordination, and delivery/teaching of curriculum for students
  • Ensure the timely completion of practicum requirements, including plan development, evaluation of student field learning outcomes, Learning Contracts, and other expectations, as well as updates of practicum site information.
  • Provide ongoing, timely support to students and field instructors if challenges to student learning emerge.
  • Manage and coordinate student and practicum placements through the centralized, School-wide computerized database system.
  • Work independently and organize work duties efficiently

Student-centered engagement:

  • Provides academic advising and facilitates CWTAP students’ successful completion of foundation and advanced practicums.  This will involve professional working relationships with DCYF and Tribal Child Welfare offices, DCYF and Tribal employee students; and non-employee students committed to service within public child welfare in Washington State.
  • Provide academic and career advising to DCYF and Tribal Child Welfare employee CWTAP students and potential DCYF employee CWTAP students.
  • Supervise and evaluate CWTAP students’ field experience;
  • Provide weekly individual and or group supervision for each student;
  • Develop quarterly syllabi for foundation and advanced practicum;
  • Develop instructional activities to address learning goals of the program;
  • Develop and facilitating integrative seminars;
  • Develop educational contracts; monitor student’s field experience and progress;
  • Help students integrate theoretical knowledge, classroom experience, and current practice;
  • Provide an educational climate that challenges students to expand professional skills, knowledge and values including working with a diverse client base from a culturally relevant perspective;
  • Document Title IV-E case forms, meetings, correspondence, and plans regarding each student’s progress;
  • Recruit, select, assign and support DCYF social workers as student mentors;
  • Collaborate with students and mentors to develop skills and activities that reflect the objectives of student’s learning contract;
  • Review and monitor OFE practicum Learning Contracts and quarterly Evaluations.
  • Meet with students for consultation and advising through groups, individually, or by written communications.
  • Ensure that student’s conduct follows the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of ethics and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) competencies.
  • Participate in planning and developing CWTAP Student Institute to include serving on a committee, recruiting students to attend, and supporting students presenting during the Institute.
  • Assist students in complying with their DCYF Participants’ Agreement
  • Attend local and statewide CWTAP meetings and conferences
  • Participate in the program’s Recruitment plan.
  • Recruit and screen applicants for the program.

Placement Site Engagement:

  • Support advising, orientation, liaison, training, and integration of learning objectives in field and classroom
  • Engage in, support, and mediate relationships with students, practicum sites, and field instructors through formal liaison function
  • Participate in the development, design, innovation, and coordination of agency-based field education curriculum and teaching modalities for Field Instructors
  • Demonstrate teaching skills for peer professional education and training
  • Advise and assist agencies in the development of a field education program for students in placement
  • Arrange practicum site visits for DCYF and Tribal Child Welfare employee students.  These site visits will include a preliminary, pre-practicum site visit to coordinate student, supervisory, and administration expectations in developing practicum proposals.  The purpose of the site visit is to ensure the student is integrating academic learning and competency development with newly acquired practicum skills.
  • Communicate with the SSW Practicum Office, partner with field advisors, child welfare faculty, DCYF supervisors and social workers on curriculum development, program activities, and student progress;
  • Provide quarterly reports of program activities to the director of CWTAP;

Field Education Program Development:

  • Participate in the design and development of field education curricula·
  • Assist in the develops and supports field sites to provide foundation and advanced CWTAP field experiences consistent with the School’s education goals and objectives as defined by the Council on social Work Education (CWSE).
  • Advise and assist agencies in the development of a field education program for students in placement
  • Actively and positively collaborate as a team member in Office of Field Education governance, program development, curricular initiatives, and other activities

SSW Professional Engagement:

  • Develop modalities to center the integration of classroom learning and practice experience in the field, in collaboration with classroom and field faculty ·
  • Engage in internal School of Social Work governance, program development, curricular and other initiatives as required of all faculty
  • Participate in School & UW governance and other initiatives relevant to field education and social work
  • Actively participate in faculty meetings and School of Social Work Committees, as assigned

  • Demonstrate scholarship and contribution to knowledge through:

Community Engagement:

  • Serve/participate in community-based organizations such as Board membership, Community-based Initiative leadership
  • Participate in community initiatives relevant to social work practice and in community-based activities relevant to social justice, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice/advocacy
  • Participate in the development and support of community-based field education efforts and in organizational or community-based initiatives to support and develop social work education
  • Participate in organizational or community-based initiatives to support development of the social work profession

Additional Responsibilities:

  • This position will be expected to work with computerized data management systems and information technology
  • Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, previous service with the Washington State Department of Children and Family Services
  • For candidates with clinical social work backgrounds, positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, LICSW
  • Some evening and weekend work is required

 

Qualifications
  • MSW (or foreign equivalent) from an accredited social work program
  • 3 years post-MSW practice in public child welfare
  • Expertise working with historically marginalized and diverse communities
  • Expertise in anti-racist, anti-oppressive social work practice and working with local community agencies, government programs, or potential/actual practicum or field sites in the Seattle and King County area
  • Expertise mediating conflicts in work-related settings, particularly between placement staff and students, or others
  • Expertise as a practicum instructor, teaching, training, facilitating group discussions or seminars, with both students and peer professionals
  • WA driver’s license is required by the start date and clean driving record
