Job Description

Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, Office of Academic Affairs/Science & Engineering unit, has need for two (2) full-time Instructional Associate positions #P002551 & #P003028. Work hours are typically between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday with evening/weekend hours required. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Position is located in Germantown, Maryland.

This position provides instructional assistance to students in person at the Science Learning Center in Germantown and online via the Virtual STEM Learning Center through one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, review sessions and workshops, primarily in biology, but also in chemistry and related areas.

Under supervision and/or direction, provide instructional support services to students and/or faculty in support of the College's academic programs. Work with students to tutor and demonstrate subject matter concepts and guide the students to reinforce faculty teaching. Incumbents may help students with course work, assignments, and associated study/learning activities and may lead/support instructional support staff and student workers in numerous activities at the learning center, as well as perform record keeping tasks. Work with faculty and/or staff to provide support and training to staff, faculty, student assistants, and students.

Tasks and activities are typically determined by the center manager, sometimes with input from department faculty. Incumbents follow specific guidelines developed by the manager in providing service to students. The completed work is reviewed for adherence to the guidelines and accuracy of the information provided. Contacts are with faculty, staff and students.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide tutorial assistance with assigned learning activities in biology, chemistry and related areas, with emphasis in biology, both in person and online.
  • Provide direction to students by reviewing assignments, guides, lesson plans, texts and learning resources, explaining and discussing subjects and learning materials and advising students on learning/study techniques.
  • May develop and conduct student orientations and subject matter workshops.
  • Assists students in utilizing learning software and other resource materials; explain and demonstrate use of such materials, select and/or recommend such materials depending on student need, answers student questions regarding the use of such materials.
  • Suggest activities that would assist students in courses served by the Science Learning Center.
  • Assist students in use of science models, equipment, etc.
  • Assist students with remediation of previously learned skills.
  • Tutor students referred for individual assistance in a subject, work with faculty lesson plans and other learning resources to repeat, supplement and strengthen understanding.
  • Develop material, in coordination with faculty and staff, to be used by students in courses served by the Science Learning Center.
  • Contribute to our resource collection by compiling new worksheets and study packets for our chemistry and biology resource inventory.
  • Provide software and hardware support, training and instruction to staff, faculty and student assistants.
  • May prepare and conduct workshops for faculty (individually and with faculty associates and other faculty presenters) and students, and assist with planning, organizing, advertising and record keeping of workshops.
  • Create marketing materials such as flyers, posters, e-mail announcements, brochures, and Inside MC Online articles.
  • May oversee and manage daily operations of the Center and may maintain department’s official web site.
  • Assist Manager with center operational tasks such as scheduling; recruiting, hiring and intake of student peer tutors; support for faculty tutors; and other duties as assigned by the Manager.
  • Assist Manager in supervisory roles when necessary, which may include directly supervising student assistant and student peer tutor activities, and corresponding with faculty members and office staff.
  • Provide reports and documents to the learning center manager, faculty or dean as directed by the learning center manager.
  • Maintain a safe and positive learning environment in the center.
  • Attend planning meetings that involve the center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry or a closely related field with the ability to tutor in all MC biology courses and in general chemistry.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience tutoring and demonstrating concepts in biology (anatomy and physiology, biological principals/general biology, environmental science, genetics, microbiology) and chemistry (general chemistry, organic chemistry) at the postsecondary school level and some experience in identifying resources that enhance the student’s learning/study experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the subject matter area to which assigned sufficient to explain and demonstrate, with willingness to continuously expand and/or add appropriate areas of expertise.
  • Considerable knowledge with instructional technology and educational materials employed with regard to learning resources.
  • Proficiency in responding to questions and requests about the subject area.
  • Skill in explaining subject matter principles, techniques and practices, working with others and serving as a liaison in support of faculty and student learning, using personal computers and instructional technology, and in developing instructional materials based on direction from others.
  • Ability to tutor one-on-one and in group settings in biology, chemistry and related areas, both in person and online.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse community, both orally and in writing.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Biology or Chemistry or closely related field.
  • Tutoring strength in all areas of biology (especially anatomy and physiology) & chemistry listed above is preferred.
  • Experience working and tutoring in a higher education setting
  • Experience working in a diverse, multicultural setting
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic computer problems
Initial salary placement $25.97 to $33.75 hourly). Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity, new hires are typically placed between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range.
