Summary Position
Elon University is a dynamic private, co-educational, residential, comprehensive institution that is a national model for engaged learning where faculty are active teachers, scholars, and mentors. The university has made significant investments to create one of the nation's most vibrant residential campuses, fully integrating student life with the university's outstanding academic programs. The university has recently undergone a residential transformation, completing the construction of more than 1,600 new beds and renovating existing facilities for a total of 4,000 on-campus residents in eight residential neighborhoods. Additional programmatic investments have included resourcing faculty-in-residence and stronger peer mentoring programs, strengthening the nationally recognized residential living learning communities, establishing "linked courses” with small cohorts of students in the same residential neighborhood co-enrolled in a common course, and investing in community planning for each residential area that reflects the university's mission and overall learning goals.

The Director of the Academic-Residential Partnerships is a 12-month position as staff with faculty rank who provides leadership in developing and supporting linkages between intellectual and residential life on campus. Specifically, the new director will provide leadership to the core group of faculty-in-residence (10) and themed living learning communities (24), and facilitate the neighborhood plans that connect academic life with residential life. In addition to their administrative duties, each year the director will also teach two courses, including at least one section of the signature interdisciplinary course in the Elon Core Curriculum (COR 1100 - The Global Experience), a required course for all first-year students in one of the nation's finest general education programs. The second course may be either a course in the director's discipline or a second section of COR 1100. The director will also be expected to teach a section of the 1-credit hour course Elon 1010, which introduces first-year students to academic expectations and campus life, and serve as the academic advisor to students in that section until they declare a major. While not required, the new director will also be offered the opportunity to live on campus to help facilitate their leadership in this area and connection to students.

In their work, the director will be expected to work closely with departments and colleagues across campus to provide training and development for faculty who are engaged in various live-on and live-out roles, to facilitate residential connections with the first-year common reading and intellectual content associated with the Core Curriculum first-year foundation courses, and to provide leadership to the Residential Campus Advisory Committee and other committees supporting the overall residential campus initiative. The director will provide an important voice among faculty on the critical role of the residential experience for the future of the university. The ability to work across constituencies on campus will be a highly valued asset for this new position.

Key elements of the director's work will be to:
  • identify and recruit faculty to serve in residential and committee roles, sponsor activities, and provide mentoring and support to all faculty who live and work in a variety of roles in the residential campus.
  • develop an assessment plan for the linked courses, and provide professional development and support to those faculty teaching these linked course sections.
  • support the outcomes associated with building an inclusive community and culture of robust civic engagement.

The successful director will value the holistic nature of campus life, understand and support student development across the four years of enrollment at the university, and be knowledgeable of the theories, practices, scholarship, and trends in residential and co-curricular learning.

The Director of Academic-Residential Partnerships will supervise the following direct reports:

  • Assistant Director of Academic-Residential Partnerships for Dining Engagement (primary report to AVP for Student Life and Dean of Campus Life)
  • Associate Director of Residence Life for Residential Education and Community Development (primary report to Assistant Dean of Campus Life / Director of Residence Life).
  • Faculty Directors and Faculty-in-Residence (secondary report to Assistant Dean of Campus Life / Director of Residence Life)
  • LLC advisors (dual report to Associate Director of Residence Life for Residential Education and Community Development)
